All Port Dover dental servicesSmall contours, deliberate decisions
An uneven outline can be noticeable even when a tooth is healthy. Reshaping may be considered for selected minor contour concerns, but it changes natural tooth structure and has limits.
At our Port Dover practice, point out the exact feature that bothers you. Ask whether contouring, adding material or leaving the tooth unchanged is the most appropriate response to your goal.

Describe the detail
The edge of a tooth, its position and its relationship with neighbouring teeth can each contribute to an uneven appearance. Point out the exact detail you want changed and ask what creates it. That distinction matters because reducing a contour does not address position in the same way as moving a tooth.
Tell the dentist whether the outline has looked this way for years or changed recently. New chipping and sensitivity need to be included even when appearance prompted the appointment. The clinician can then consider the condition and cause of the change before deciding whether a limited cosmetic adjustment is appropriate.
Consider the limits
Assessment of the tooth and bite comes before deciding how much contour change is reasonable. Ask what would be removed, the limitations for that area and the risks relevant to your tooth. Because removed enamel does not grow back, even a minor-looking change deserves an explanation you understand before proceeding.
Do not try to file an edge at home to test whether you would prefer the result. A small alteration can affect structure or contact with other teeth in ways that are difficult to judge yourself. Bring the appearance question to assessment while the existing tooth can still be considered in full.
Compare approaches
Where adding to a contour would suit the goal better than reducing it, bonding may be worth discussing. A position concern or more extensive defect may call for movement or a different restoration. Compare only the approaches suitable for your findings, including their preparation and future maintenance.
Return to the exact change you wanted when weighing the options. Ask what each approach would improve, what would remain and whether leaving the tooth unchanged is reasonable. A procedure that appears quick is not automatically the best fit for the diagnosis or the feature that prompted your consultation.
Review the result
After an agreed adjustment, describe how the tooth feels against your lip, tongue and opposing teeth as well as how the outline looks. Confirm which changes to report and whom to contact if sensitivity or an unfamiliar bite develops. The review should consider function and comfort alongside the appearance that was planned.
Continue routine dental care and discuss any wish for another adjustment through reassessment. Repeated small reductions still draw on the natural structure available, which limits further change. Do not alter the edge yourself or assume an earlier contouring decision establishes that more removal would also be appropriate.
Planning your appointment
Tell our Port Dover team whether the edge has always looked this way or changed after a chip. That history helps distinguish cosmetic planning from assessment of damage.
Bring any questions about alternatives and ask for an explanation of the proposed change before treatment begins.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Contouring changes an outline rather than moving a tooth. Ask whether the concern comes from shape or position. Tooth movement or another approach may be more appropriate after assessment of the bite.
Removing natural enamel is not reversible in the sense of growing it back. Ask exactly what would be altered and consider the limits before deciding on a procedure, even when the adjustment seems minor.
Sometimes a small contour adjustment may be considered, but the tooth needs assessment first. The cause and extent of damage determine whether smoothing alone addresses the concern or a repair is needed.
It may be suitable when adding material can address the goal. Ask how bonding and contouring compare for your tooth, including the preparation, appearance and future maintenance each would involve.
Contact the practice and describe the symptom and its timing. Do not attempt further adjustment yourself. The dentist can assess the tooth and explain whether additional care or review is appropriate.
A recent chip may need investigation before cosmetic bonding. Tell our Port Dover team how the damage happened and which change you would like considered.
How many veneers suit the change you want? At a Port Dover consultation, discuss the visible teeth, neighbouring shades and features you would prefer to preserve.
