Cosmetic tooth reshaping, sometimes called enameloplasty or contouring, involves gently polishing away small amounts of enamel to smooth a chipped edge, soften a pointed canine or balance teeth of slightly different lengths. It is usually quick and comfortable. Because enamel does not grow back, the change is permanent and has to be planned carefully.
If you are in Pine Grove and a small irregularity bothers you, our Port Dover office can assess whether reshaping is suitable. Sometimes bonding or another option suits better, and the dentist will explain why.

Good candidates
Slightly uneven edges, small chips, minor overlaps and pointed tips are common reasons people ask about reshaping. It can make teeth look more even and sometimes reduce spots where the tongue catches. The teeth need healthy enamel and gums, and the dentist will check that there is enough thickness to remove a little safely.
Reshaping cannot change tooth colour, close large gaps or fix significant crowding. Removing too much enamel can increase sensitivity or weaken a tooth. If your concern is larger, the dentist may suggest bonding, veneers or alignment. Combining a small amount of reshaping with another treatment is also sometimes discussed.
Planning the change
Tooth edges play a role in how your jaws move and how teeth guide each other when you chew. The dentist will check your bite to make sure reshaping will not interfere with function. X-rays may be used to look at the pulp inside the tooth, making sure enough enamel covers it.
Ask whether the dentist can mark or describe exactly which areas will be smoothed. In some situations a mock-up or photographs help preview the change. Because the result is permanent, it is worth discussing how conservative the approach will be and what the teeth will look like next to their neighbours.
The procedure
Because only outer enamel is involved, freezing is often unnecessary, though you can ask if you feel anxious. The dentist uses fine instruments or polishing discs to remove small amounts of enamel gradually, stopping frequently to check the shape. You may feel vibration or slight pressure, and can ask to pause at any time.
Once the shape looks right, the dentist checks your bite and the way teeth glide together. The surface is then polished smooth. You will have a chance to look in a mirror. If anything looks uneven, mention it before the appointment ends so small refinements can be made while you are there.
Afterward
There is usually no recovery time. Some people notice brief sensitivity to cold, which tends to settle. Your tongue may take a few days to get used to the new feel of the edges. If sensitivity lingers or grows, or if your bite feels off, contact the office so the dentist can check the teeth.
Protect reshaped teeth with the same care as all your teeth. Brush gently with fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth daily and avoid using teeth as tools. If you grind, ask about a night guard to prevent new chips. Regular checkups help confirm the enamel remains healthy over time.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office and describe which teeth concern you. The dentist will examine them and explain whether reshaping or a different option is the better fit.
A recent smile photo can help explain the concern. Bring any previous dental records, especially if the teeth have been restored before.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Most people feel little or no discomfort because only outer enamel is involved. Some notice vibration or brief sensitivity. If you feel uneasy, let the dentist know so freezing or breaks can be considered.
No. Enamel removed cannot grow back. That is why planning is careful and conservative. If you are unsure, discuss bonding or other reversible-feeling options that add material rather than remove it.
When done conservatively on healthy enamel, lasting sensitivity is uncommon. Short-term sensitivity can occur. The dentist assesses enamel thickness first to limit the risk.
Many cases take a single visit, often fairly short, depending on how many teeth are involved. The office can estimate time when you book based on what you describe.
Only very minor overlaps can be improved. More significant crowding or rotation usually needs orthodontic treatment such as clear aligners. The dentist can explain which approach suits your situation.
Bonding adds tooth-coloured resin to repair chips, close small gaps or reshape edges. Pine Grove patients can see what it suits and how long it typically lasts.
Veneers cover the front of teeth to change colour, shape or length. Pine Grove patients can learn about preparation, permanence and long-term veneer care.
