Cosmetic reshaping, sometimes called enamel contouring, involves carefully removing small amounts of the outer tooth surface to change its length, shape or outline. It can soften a pointed canine, even out slightly uneven edges or smooth a minor chip. Because enamel does not grow back, the dentist plans reshaping conservatively.
If you live in Normandale and have small irregularities you would like to refine, our Port Dover team can assess whether reshaping is suitable. We will explain how much change is realistic and whether bonding or another option might give a better result.

Is it suitable?
Slightly uneven lengths, small chips, rough edges and teeth that look a little too pointed are typical concerns. Reshaping can sometimes improve how teeth line up visually without moving them. It is often combined with bonding to add material where needed and refine the overall outline of the smile.
Teeth with thin enamel, significant decay, large fillings or sensitivity may not be good candidates. Major alignment or bite issues usually need orthodontic treatment instead. The dentist will check enamel thickness, often with x-rays, and explain whether reshaping could compromise the tooth’s health.
Planning the change
The dentist may mark the areas to be adjusted, show you in a mirror or use photos to explain the planned change. You can say whether you want a softer, more rounded look or simply a smoother edge. Agreeing on the goal before any enamel is removed helps avoid surprises.
Reshaping must respect how your teeth meet. Shortening one edge, for instance, might change how the front teeth guide your jaw when you move it sideways. The dentist checks your bite so adjustments do not create new contact problems or concentrate force on one area.
The procedure
Because only enamel is being adjusted, anaesthetic is often unnecessary. The dentist uses fine instruments to remove small amounts of surface in stages, checking the appearance frequently. You may feel vibration but generally little discomfort. If sensitivity arises, mention it so the dentist can pause.
Once the outline is right, the surfaces are smoothed and polished to leave a natural sheen. The dentist rechecks your bite to make sure everything feels balanced. You can look in the mirror and discuss any final refinements before the appointment ends.
Afterwards
Most people return to normal eating straight away. A small amount of temporary sensitivity can occur, and it usually settles. If a tooth feels rough, the bite seems off or sensitivity persists, contact the office so the area can be smoothed or checked again.
Reshaping is permanent, so protect your enamel with good habits. Avoid biting hard objects, use a night guard if you grind and keep up regular checkups. If you later want further changes, the dentist can advise whether more reshaping is safe or another approach would be better.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and mention which teeth you would like refined. The team can arrange an assessment that includes time to discuss your goals and look at your bite.
If you have photos showing the look you would like, bring them along to help guide the conversation.

Reshaping usually involves only enamel, which has no nerves, so most people find it comfortable. Mild sensitivity is possible. Let the dentist know if anything feels uncomfortable during the procedure.
It can improve the appearance of very slight irregularities, but it does not move teeth. Noticeable crowding or bite issues generally need orthodontic treatment such as aligners or braces.
Yes. Enamel removed during reshaping does not grow back. That is why the dentist plans conservatively and discusses the expected outcome with you beforehand.
Often, yes. Reshaping removes small amounts while bonding adds material where needed. Together they can refine shape more effectively than either alone in some cases.
It depends on how many teeth are involved and how much change is planned. The team can give you an estimate after the assessment.
Bonding uses tooth-coloured resin to fix chips, small gaps and worn edges. Normandale patients can learn about suitability, upkeep and limits at our Port Dover office.
Veneers cover the front of teeth to change colour, shape or length. Normandale patients can weigh preparation, durability and upkeep at our Port Dover office.
