Cosmetic reshaping, also called contouring, removes a very small amount of enamel to smooth a jagged edge, soften a pointed canine or even out teeth that look slightly different in length. It can be quick and involves no added material, but enamel does not grow back, so the decision is permanent and depends on having enough healthy enamel to spare.
Long Point patients interested in subtle refinements can arrange an assessment at our Port Dover office to learn whether reshaping suits their teeth or whether bonding or another option would be safer.

Good candidates
Small chips, slightly overlapping edges, a tooth that looks a touch longer than its neighbour or tiny ridges on the surface may respond well to contouring. The change is often subtle yet noticeable in photos and close conversation. The dentist will look at how your teeth meet to make sure reshaping does not interfere with the bite.
If enamel is thin, teeth are already sensitive or the concern is significant crowding or discolouration, reshaping may not be a good choice. Removing enamel could increase sensitivity or weaken a tooth. In these cases, bonding, aligners or veneers may be discussed as alternatives better suited to the goal.
Planning the change
The dentist may examine enamel thickness, take X-rays and photograph your smile. Areas to be smoothed may be marked and discussed with you before any change is made. Because the procedure is irreversible, it helps to agree on exactly which edges are to be refined and how much change is realistic.
Reshaping is sometimes paired with bonding, where a little material is added to one tooth while another is gently contoured. Combined approaches can balance a smile with minimal alteration. Ask the dentist to explain the trade-offs so you can decide between a single method and a blended plan.
The appointment
Using fine instruments and polishing discs, the dentist removes small amounts of enamel in stages. Freezing is often unnecessary because only the outer enamel is involved, though you can ask about comfort beforehand. You may feel vibration and pressure. The dentist pauses to check progress so the change remains controlled and conservative.
After shaping, the teeth are polished smooth. Your bite is checked to make sure teeth meet comfortably and evenly. You will be able to see the result right away in a mirror. If something feels unusual when you close, mention it before leaving so it can be reviewed while you are still in the chair.
Afterward
Some people notice mild sensitivity to cold for a short time after contouring. A toothpaste for sensitive teeth may help. If sensitivity is strong or lasts, contact the office. Edges should feel smooth; any sharpness or rough spot can usually be polished at a brief follow-up.
Avoid biting fingernails, pens or other hard objects that can chip edges. If you grind your teeth, discuss a night guard so newly refined edges are not worn down. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor the reshaped teeth along with the rest of your mouth.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book a cosmetic assessment and describe which teeth bother you. The team can arrange time for the dentist to examine enamel and discuss whether contouring is suitable.
Photos of your smile from different angles can help show what you notice, along with any history of tooth sensitivity.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Yes. Enamel removed during contouring does not grow back. That is why the dentist assesses enamel thickness carefully and keeps changes conservative, agreeing on the plan with you before starting.
Most people find it comfortable because only the outer enamel is smoothed. You may feel vibration. Ask about comfort options if you are anxious or your teeth tend to be sensitive.
Only very minor irregularities. Noticeable crowding or rotation generally needs orthodontic treatment such as aligners. The dentist can explain which approach would meet your goal.
When done conservatively on teeth with adequate enamel, reshaping should not significantly weaken them. If removal would compromise a tooth, the dentist will suggest alternatives instead.
Yes. If whitening is planned, discuss the order with the dentist. Shade and shape changes are often considered together to achieve a balanced, natural-looking result.
Bonding adds tooth-coloured resin to repair chips, close minor gaps or cover marks. Long Point patients can see whether it suits them at our Port Dover office.
Veneers cover the front of teeth to change shape, colour or alignment. Long Point patients can weigh porcelain and composite options with our Port Dover dentist.
