Cosmetic tooth reshaping, sometimes called enamel contouring, removes a very small amount of outer enamel to smooth rough edges, shorten a slightly long tooth or soften a pointed tip. It is one of the more conservative cosmetic procedures, but because enamel does not grow back, the decision should be made carefully and with a clear goal.
Patients from Langton who are curious about reshaping can have their teeth assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will check enamel thickness, bite and tooth health and explain whether contouring alone could achieve the change you want or whether bonding would be a better complement.

Suitable concerns
Small chips along the biting edge, teeth that are slightly uneven in length, a canine that looks overly pointed or tiny overlaps between front teeth are typical candidates. Removing a fraction of a millimetre in the right spot can make a smile look more balanced. The change is subtle and natural looking, which many people appreciate.
Teeth that are significantly crowded, rotated, discoloured or short usually need other treatment, such as aligners, whitening, bonding or veneers. Reshaping cannot add length, change colour or fill gaps. The dentist will explain where its limits lie for your teeth so expectations are realistic and you are not disappointed by the result after the appointment.
Assessment
Enamel thickness varies from tooth to tooth and person to person. X-rays and a careful examination help the dentist decide how much can safely be removed without making the tooth sensitive or weak. Teeth with decay, large fillings or enamel already thinned by wear, grinding or acid erosion may not be good candidates for contouring.
Front teeth guide how the jaw moves when you chew and grind. Changing their shape can alter how forces are distributed across the rest of the mouth. The dentist checks your bite and may mark contact points before reshaping, so the cosmetic change does not create new pressure on other teeth or affect comfort when chewing.
The procedure
The dentist may mark the areas to be adjusted and show you the planned change in a mirror. Using fine polishing instruments, they remove tiny amounts of enamel a little at a time, checking the shape frequently. Because only outer enamel is involved, most people feel vibration rather than discomfort and do not need any freezing.
Once the shape looks right, the teeth are polished smooth. You will be given a mirror to review the result, and the dentist will check your bite again. If a further small adjustment would help, it can be made before you leave, but it is wise to err on the side of removing too little.
Afterwards
Most people return to normal eating straight away. Mild sensitivity is uncommon but can occur if enamel in an area was thinner than expected. It usually settles. Let the office know if sensitivity persists, if a tooth feels rough or if your bite feels different in a way that does not improve after a few days.
Reshaped enamel needs the same care as the rest of your teeth: brushing with fluoride toothpaste, daily flossing and regular exams. If grinding, nail biting or chewing on tools caused the original chipping, consider whether a night guard or changing the habit could help prevent the edges from wearing unevenly again in the years ahead.
Planning your appointment
Book a cosmetic consultation or mention reshaping at your next checkup in Port Dover. The dentist can assess your teeth and show you what small changes might look like before any enamel is removed.
Bring a photo highlighting the teeth that bother you, so the discussion starts with your specific concern rather than general ideas.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Yes. Enamel removed during reshaping does not grow back. That is why the dentist removes only small amounts and confirms the plan with you first. If you are unsure, ask about reversible or additive options like bonding to try first.
Most patients feel only vibration or light pressure because the work stays within the outer enamel. Anaesthetic is not usually needed. Tell the dentist immediately if you feel sensitivity so they can pause and reassess the area.
Only very minor overlaps can be improved with reshaping. Significant crowding or rotation needs orthodontic treatment such as clear aligners or braces. The dentist will explain which approach fits the amount of change you want and why.
It is often paired with bonding, whitening or aligners to fine-tune the final appearance. For example, edges may be evened after aligner treatment. The dentist can suggest a sequence that makes sense for your goals.
When done conservatively on healthy teeth with adequate enamel, reshaping should not significantly weaken them. The dentist evaluates enamel thickness beforehand and avoids teeth that would be at risk of sensitivity or fracture in the months afterwards.
Bonding uses tooth-coloured resin to repair chips, close small gaps and reshape edges. Langton patients can learn what it can do and how long it holds up.
Veneers cover the front of teeth to change colour, shape or length. Langton patients can learn who is a good candidate and how veneers are maintained.
