Port Dover Family Dentistry
Small chips, pointed edges or uneven lengths can sometimes be refined by contouring enamel. Jarvis patients can ask at our Port Dover office whether reshaping suits them.

Cosmetic reshaping, also called enamel contouring, removes a very small amount of enamel to smooth rough spots, soften pointed canines or even out slightly uneven edges. It is conservative and often completed in a single visit. Because enamel does not grow back, the dentist needs to be sure there is enough thickness before proceeding.
Jarvis residents bothered by minor irregularities can be assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will check whether reshaping alone can achieve your goal or whether bonding or another approach would be a better fit.

Good candidates
Tiny chips along biting edges, slightly overlapping corners, teeth that look a little too long next to their neighbours, or sharp points that catch the lip are typical examples. The change is subtle but can make a smile look more even. The dentist will discuss whether the improvement you hope for is achievable this way.
Large chips, significant crowding, discoloration or thin enamel usually need other solutions such as bonding, aligners, whitening or veneers. If your bite places heavy forces on the teeth in question, the dentist may be cautious about removing enamel. An honest assessment helps you avoid an outcome that does not meet expectations.
The assessment
The dentist examines the teeth and may take X-rays to assess enamel thickness and the location of the inner pulp. Your bite is checked to make sure that changing an edge will not affect how teeth meet when you chew. Healthy gums and the absence of decay are important before any cosmetic work.
You and the dentist can discuss exactly which edges will be changed and by how much. In some cases the changes can be marked or explained using a mirror or photos. Ask questions until you understand what will be done, since enamel removal is permanent.
The procedure
Reshaping generally does not require freezing because only the outer enamel is involved. The dentist uses fine instruments to remove small amounts gradually, stopping often to check the shape. You will be able to look in a mirror along the way and share whether the change is heading in the right direction.
Once the shape is right, the surfaces are polished smooth. The dentist checks your bite again to make sure nothing feels uneven. Reshaping is sometimes combined with bonding on other teeth to balance the overall look. Ask what was done to each tooth before leaving.
Afterward
Some people notice brief sensitivity, though this is not common when the changes are small. The reshaped teeth may feel different to your tongue at first. If you notice persistent sensitivity, or if the bite feels off after a few days, contact the office for a check.
Brush and floss as usual and keep regular checkups. Avoid habits like nail biting or chewing on pens, which can chip edges again. If you grind your teeth, ask whether a night guard would help protect the newly shaped edges from wear.

Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Usually not, since it involves only the outer enamel, which has no nerves. Most people feel light vibration and pressure. Freezing is rarely needed, but tell the dentist if you feel uncomfortable at any point.
Yes. Removed enamel does not grow back, which is why the dentist takes a conservative approach and confirms you are comfortable with the plan before starting.
It can disguise very minor overlaps but does not move teeth. Noticeable crowding or misalignment is usually better addressed with aligners or braces. The dentist can explain your options.
When only small amounts are removed from teeth with adequate enamel, strength is generally not significantly affected. The dentist assesses enamel thickness first and may recommend a different option if it is thin.
Yes. Some people combine reshaping with whitening or bonding for a more balanced result. The dentist can suggest the order in which treatments work best.
Bonding uses tooth-coloured resin to repair chips, close small gaps or reshape edges. Jarvis residents can find out at our Port Dover office whether it suits their smile.
Veneers can change the colour, shape and length of front teeth. Before committing, Jarvis patients can review candidacy, tooth preparation and long-term care with us.
