Port Dover Family Dentistry
Small uneven edges or a slightly long tooth can sometimes be smoothed. Glen Meyer patients can ask whether enamel reshaping suits their teeth and bite.

Cosmetic reshaping, sometimes called enameloplasty or contouring, involves gently smoothing and polishing small amounts of enamel to adjust a tooth’s outline. It can soften a pointed canine, even out a chipped edge or balance the length of front teeth. Because enamel does not grow back, the changes are permanent.
If a small irregularity has bothered you for a while, our Port Dover office can assess whether reshaping is a sensible option for your teeth. Glen Meyer patients can discuss what is achievable, how the bite will be protected and whether bonding would be a better fit.

Is it the right tool
Reshaping is generally considered for minor concerns such as a slightly uneven edge, a tiny chip, small bumps on the biting surface or teeth that look a little too long next to their neighbours. The aim is a subtle improvement in balance. It works best when the teeth are healthy and there is enough enamel thickness to allow light smoothing.
Significant crowding, large chips, gaps or discolouration usually need other approaches, such as bonding, veneers or orthodontic treatment. In some cases reshaping is combined with bonding to achieve a better result. The dentist can explain why one option is being recommended over another, and what each would mean for the health and appearance of your teeth over time.
Checking the bite
Before any enamel is removed, the dentist looks at how your upper and lower teeth contact when you bite and slide your jaw from side to side. Edges that guide your jaw movements may need to stay as they are. Changing them could shift forces onto other teeth, so function is weighed alongside appearance before deciding what to adjust.
X-rays and a close examination help confirm the teeth are free of decay and that the enamel is thick enough for gentle contouring. Thin or worn enamel may rule reshaping out. Sensitivity, gum recession or a history of grinding are worth mentioning, since each can affect whether removing even a small amount of enamel is wise.
The appointment
The dentist may mark the areas to be adjusted and talk you through the planned change while you look in a mirror. This is your opportunity to say whether the proposed shape matches what you had in mind. Working in small steps allows the result to be reviewed along the way rather than taking off too much enamel at once.
Enamel is smoothed with fine instruments and then polished. Because only the outer layer is involved, numbing is often not needed, though you should mention any sensitivity. The bite is checked again afterward. The appointment is usually brief, but the dentist will confirm the expected length based on how many teeth are being adjusted and how much refinement is planned.
Living with the result
Your tongue may notice the change immediately, and the teeth can feel slightly different when you bite for a day or two. Mild sensitivity sometimes occurs. If your bite feels uneven, or sensitivity persists or increases, contact the office so the dentist can check whether a small refinement or other care is needed. Most people adapt quickly.
Reshaped teeth need the same care as the rest of your smile: brushing with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between teeth and attending regular checkups. If you grind or clench, discuss protection, because heavy wear could change the edges again. Avoid biting hard objects such as pens, ice or fishing line that can chip the polished enamel.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and describe the tooth or edge that bothers you. The team can arrange an assessment, which may be combined with a checkup if you are due for one.
Bring a photo that shows the concern clearly if it is easier to see in pictures than in the mirror, and mention any history of grinding.

Most people find it comfortable because only a thin layer of outer enamel is smoothed. Some feel mild sensitivity during or after the appointment. Let the dentist know if anything feels uncomfortable so they can pause, adjust their approach or discuss numbing.
No. Enamel that is removed does not grow back, which is why changes are planned carefully and made in small steps. If you are unsure, ask whether a reversible option such as bonding could be tried first to preview a similar effect.
When limited to small amounts of healthy enamel, reshaping is generally conservative. Removing too much could increase sensitivity or wear. The dentist assesses enamel thickness and your bite to decide how much, if anything, can be safely adjusted.
It can sometimes improve the appearance of very minor overlaps by smoothing edges, but it does not move teeth. For noticeable crowding or misalignment, orthodontic options such as aligners or braces are usually more appropriate, and the dentist can explain them.
The new shape is permanent, but edges can still chip or wear over time with grinding, biting hard objects or normal ageing. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor the reshaped teeth and suggest protection if wear starts to show.
Bonding uses tooth-coloured resin to repair chips, close small gaps or reshape edges. Glen Meyer patients can learn its strengths, limits and day-to-day upkeep.
Veneers are thin shells bonded to the front of teeth to change shape or colour. Glen Meyer patients can learn who suits them, what preparation means and upkeep.
