Cosmetic reshaping, sometimes called contouring, removes a very small amount of enamel to smooth uneven edges, soften pointed canines or balance tooth lengths. It is one of the more conservative cosmetic treatments, but because enamel does not grow back, it should only be done after careful assessment of how much can safely be removed.
Boston patients interested in reshaping can book a consultation at our Port Dover office. Point out the specific teeth that bother you, and the dentist can check enamel thickness, your bite and whether reshaping alone or a combination with bonding would work better for you.

Who it suits
Slightly chipped edges, small bumps, teeth that are a touch longer than their neighbours or tips that look sharp can often be refined. The change is usually subtle, but it can make a smile look more even and balanced. It is particularly suited to people who want a modest improvement without adding any material to their natural teeth.
Reshaping cannot fix significant crowding, large gaps, deep stains or major differences in tooth size. Thin enamel, existing sensitivity or teeth with the nerve close to the surface may make it unsuitable. In these cases, the dentist may suggest bonding, veneers or orthodontic treatment instead, and will explain clearly why reshaping alone would fall short.
Assessment
The dentist examines the teeth and may use x-rays to understand enamel thickness and how close the inner layers are to the surface. Any decay or gum problems should be addressed first. Sensitive teeth need particular care, since removing even a little enamel can sometimes increase sensitivity to cold drinks or sweet foods in the days and weeks afterward.
Your bite affects which edges can safely be adjusted. Removing enamel from a tooth that guides jaw movement can change how teeth meet when you chew or slide your jaw sideways. The dentist will check how your teeth come together and discuss whether reshaping could influence your bite before suggesting any changes to the edges you have pointed out.
The appointment
The dentist may mark the areas to be adjusted and show you in a mirror what is planned. You can give feedback before anything is removed. Because enamel has no nerves, numbing is often not needed for small adjustments, though you can certainly ask about comfort measures if you feel uneasy about the sensation or sound.
Fine instruments are used to remove tiny amounts of enamel, and the dentist checks the result frequently as they go. Edges are then polished smooth. You will be able to look in a mirror and comment. The dentist can make small further refinements, but it is wise to err on the side of removing too little rather than too much.
Afterward
Teeth may feel slightly different to your tongue for a day or two. Some people notice mild sensitivity, which usually settles on its own. If sensitivity is significant or lasts more than a few days, or if your bite feels off when you close, contact the office so the dentist can check the treated teeth and adjust if needed.
Good brushing and flossing habits keep reshaped teeth healthy. Avoid biting very hard objects, and mention grinding if it happens, since it can chip edges again over time. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor the treated areas, as well as the rest of your smile, and catch any new wear or chipping early, while it is still easy to address.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office to book a cosmetic consultation about tooth reshaping. Mention which teeth concern you, so the dentist can focus on them during the assessment and explain what is possible.
If you are also considering whitening or bonding, say so, since the order of treatments can affect the final result.
Before you book

Small adjustments are often done without numbing, since enamel has no nerves. Some people feel mild sensitivity afterward that settles within days. Let the dentist know if you are concerned about comfort before treatment begins, so options can be discussed.
Yes. Enamel that is removed does not grow back. That is why the dentist takes a cautious approach, removes only small amounts and checks the result frequently during treatment rather than making large changes at once.
Only very minor irregularities can be improved this way. Significant crowding or misalignment usually needs orthodontic treatment such as aligners. The dentist will explain whether reshaping alone can achieve the look you want or whether another approach is better.
When done conservatively on suitable teeth, it removes very little enamel and should not weaken them. The dentist checks enamel thickness first. Teeth with thin enamel or existing sensitivity may not be good candidates for this treatment.
Yes. Sometimes small amounts of bonding are added to some teeth while others are gently reshaped, to balance a smile. The dentist can explain whether a combined approach would suit you and how the two steps would be planned.
Bonding uses tooth-coloured resin to repair chips, close small gaps or reshape edges. See what Boston residents can expect from a visit in Port Dover.
Veneers can change the colour, shape or size of front teeth. Boston patients can learn at our Port Dover office what veneers involve and their trade-offs.
