Composite is a tooth-coloured resin that bonds to enamel and dentin. It is commonly used to fill cavities, repair small chips and replace worn areas near the gumline. Because it is placed in layers and hardened with a curing light, the dentist can shape it to match the tooth, though larger repairs on heavy-chewing back teeth may need a stronger option.
If a cavity or small break has been found and you are travelling from Walsingham, composite fillings are placed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain whether composite suits the size and location of the problem, what the appointment involves and how to look after the filling so it lasts.

Is composite right?
Composite is often a good choice for small to moderate cavities, chipped edges, decay at the gumline and front teeth where appearance is important. Because it bonds to the tooth, the dentist can sometimes remove less healthy tooth structure than with some older filling types. The colour can be matched closely to the surrounding teeth.
When a cavity is very large, a cusp is cracked or the tooth takes heavy biting forces, an inlay, onlay or crown may provide better long-term strength. The dentist will look at the remaining tooth structure, your bite and any grinding habits, then explain the pros and cons of each option before you decide.
The appointment
Most fillings begin with local anaesthetic so the tooth stays comfortable. The dentist removes decay or damaged material and keeps the area dry, sometimes using a thin rubber sheet called a dam. A gel is applied to prepare the surface, followed by a bonding agent that helps the composite attach securely to the tooth.
Composite is placed in layers, each hardened with a blue curing light. The dentist then shapes and polishes the filling and checks your bite with thin marking paper. Let the dentist know if anything feels high or uneven before you leave, as small adjustments are easier while you are still in the chair.
Afterwards
Numbness usually fades within a few hours, so avoid chewing on that side or drinking hot liquids until feeling returns. Some people notice mild sensitivity to cold or biting pressure for a short time, particularly after deeper fillings. This often settles on its own. Using a toothpaste for sensitive teeth may help in the meantime.
Call the office if the bite feels high after the freezing wears off, if pain keeps increasing or if sensitivity lingers for weeks. Sharp pain when biting, swelling or a throbbing ache may suggest the tooth needs further assessment. Adjusting a high spot is usually quick and can make a big difference to comfort.
Making it last
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth every day. New decay can start at the edges of any filling, so regular checkups let the dentist spot early changes. Reducing how often you have sugary snacks and drinks also lowers the risk of decay forming around the repair.
Composite can chip or wear if you grind your teeth, bite your nails or chew ice and pens. Coffee, tea and red wine may gradually stain the surface. Ask whether a night guard would help if you clench at night. The dentist can polish, repair or replace a composite filling when wear or staining becomes a concern.
Planning your appointment
When you contact our Port Dover office, mention which teeth have been flagged for fillings and whether any are painful. If several fillings are planned, ask whether they can be grouped to reduce the number of trips.
Bring any recent X-rays or treatment plans from another dentist, and let the team know about medications or allergies before the appointment.
Before you book

It varies with the size of the filling, its location, your bite and home care. Many last for years. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor edges and wear and to recommend repair or replacement when needed.
Sometimes, if the existing filling is failing or there is decay underneath. Replacing a sound filling purely for appearance is a decision to discuss carefully, since removal also takes away some tooth structure.
Yes. The light hardens the composite and is used for short periods. The team takes care to shield your eyes and soft tissues during use.
The dentist selects a shade to blend with your natural teeth. Small differences may be noticeable up close, especially if teeth are later whitened, since composite does not lighten with whitening products.
Composite is hardened before you leave, but it is best to wait until numbness wears off so you do not bite your cheek or tongue. Start with softer foods if the tooth feels tender.
Too much damage for a filling, not enough for a crown? Walsingham patients can learn how inlays and onlays restore back teeth while keeping more natural tooth structure.
Dark, worn or leaking fillings can sometimes be replaced with tooth-coloured materials. Walsingham patients can learn when replacement makes sense and when to leave a filling alone.
