Caring for Villa Nova patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Villa NovaRepair that blends in
A composite filling is made from a tooth-coloured resin that is bonded to the tooth and hardened with a curing light. It is commonly used for cavities, small fractures and worn areas, and because it can be shaded to match surrounding enamel, it tends to blend in well on both front and back teeth when the size and location of the damage are suitable.
If you are travelling from Villa Nova for a filling, our Port Dover team can explain whether composite is appropriate for your tooth. Larger cavities or heavy biting forces sometimes call for a different type of restoration.

Identifying the need
Sensitivity to sweets, cold or biting, food catching between two teeth, a rough edge your tongue keeps finding, or a visible dark spot can all suggest a problem. Some people notice nothing at all. If you have one of these signs, mention which tooth and when it started, as this helps focus the examination.
Many cavities are found during checkups, sometimes with help from X-rays that show decay between teeth. The dentist will explain where the cavity is, how deep it appears and whether it needs treatment now. Very small changes in enamel are occasionally monitored instead, depending on your risk and the location.
Is composite right
Composite suits many small to moderate cavities and chipped edges. It bonds to the tooth, which can allow a more conservative preparation in some cases. It is also used to replace older fillings when they break down. The dentist will match the shade as closely as possible to your natural tooth colour.
Very large cavities, teeth with cracks, or areas under heavy grinding forces may be better served by an inlay, onlay or crown. Composite also needs a dry field to bond properly, which can be harder in some locations. Ask the dentist to explain why composite is or is not recommended for your specific tooth.
The appointment
Local anaesthetic is generally used to keep the tooth comfortable. The decay is removed, and the tooth is cleaned and prepared for bonding. A thin barrier may be placed to keep the area dry. Let the dentist know if you need a break at any point, or if you start to feel discomfort.
The composite is applied in layers, each hardened with a curing light. Once the tooth is rebuilt, the dentist shapes it to follow your natural contours and checks your bite with marking paper. Final polishing helps the surface feel smooth. Expect your lip or tongue to stay numb for a while afterward.
Aftercare
Avoid chewing on the numb side until feeling returns, to protect your cheek and tongue. Mild sensitivity to cold or biting can occur for a short time. If the bite feels high, pain increases, or sensitivity does not settle after a week or two, call the office so the dentist can check the filling.
Composite can stain or wear over time, especially with frequent coffee, tea, red wine or tobacco use, or with grinding. Brush twice daily, clean between teeth and keep regular checkups. If you grind at night, ask whether a guard would help protect both natural teeth and fillings.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office if you think you have a cavity or a broken filling. Describe the tooth and any sensitivity so the team can book the right appointment length.
If you have had reactions to dental materials or anaesthetic before, mention it when booking and again at the appointment.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Composite is used on back teeth in many cases. For very large cavities or heavy biting forces, the dentist may suggest another option. The recommendation depends on the size of the repair and your bite.
The dentist selects a shade to blend with your natural tooth. Teeth can change colour over time, and composite may stain, so the match may shift gradually.
It depends on the size and number of fillings. Ask when booking so you can plan your day and travel accordingly.
Some sensitivity to cold or biting can occur briefly. If it worsens or does not improve after a couple of weeks, contact the office so the filling and bite can be checked.
Sometimes, particularly if the old filling is failing or there is new decay. The dentist will advise whether replacement is appropriate and which material suits that tooth.
Too much damage for a filling, not enough for a crown? Villa Nova patients can learn how inlays and onlays restore back teeth at our Port Dover office.
Dark, worn or leaking fillings can sometimes be replaced with tooth-coloured materials. Villa Nova patients can learn when replacement is advised in Port Dover.
