Tooth-coloured repair

A composite filling rebuilds a tooth while blending in.

Composite is a tooth-coloured resin that bonds to enamel and dentin. It is commonly used to fill cavities, replace small sections of broken tooth and repair worn areas. Because it is placed in layers and hardened with a curing light, the dentist can shape it to match the natural contours and shade of your tooth.

For patients coming in from Vanessa, a composite filling is usually completed in a single visit at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain whether composite suits the size and location of your cavity, or whether another restoration, such as an onlay or crown, would hold up better over time.

Is composite suitable

Composite suits many cavities, but not every one.

Where composite works well

Small to medium cavities on front and back teeth are often good candidates for composite. It also works well for repairing chips and closing small gaps between teeth. Because it bonds directly to the tooth, less healthy structure may need to be removed compared with some older filling methods, which helps preserve more of your natural tooth for the future.

Limits to consider

Very large cavities, teeth under heavy biting force or teeth that have lost a whole cusp may be better served by an onlay or crown. Composite can wear or chip over the years, especially in people who grind or clench. The dentist will explain those trade-offs plainly, so you can make a choice with realistic expectations about lifespan.

Placing the filling

The appointment follows a careful, step-by-step sequence.

  1. Numbing and removing decay

The dentist numbs the area and removes the decayed portion of the tooth. The tooth is kept dry, often with a small barrier or cotton rolls, because moisture weakens the bond. A shade is chosen to match your tooth, and the surface is conditioned so the composite can adhere firmly. You can raise a hand at any point if you need a pause.

  2. Layering, curing and shaping

Composite is added in thin layers, each hardened with a blue curing light. The dentist then shapes the filling to follow the tooth’s natural grooves, checks your bite with marking paper and polishes the surface smooth. You can usually eat once the numbness wears off, taking care not to bite your cheek, lip or tongue in the meantime.

Afterward

Mild sensitivity often settles on its own.

  • Sensitivity in the first days

Some sensitivity to cold, pressure or sweets is common for a few days, particularly after deeper fillings. It usually eases steadily as the tooth settles. A toothpaste for sensitive teeth may help in the meantime. Chew gently on the treated tooth at first and avoid very hard or crunchy foods until it feels completely normal again.

  • When to call back

If your bite feels high, the tooth aches whenever you chew, or sensitivity grows worse rather than better, call the office. A quick bite adjustment often solves the first problem in a few minutes. Lingering, throbbing or night-time pain may need a further look to check whether the nerve of the tooth has been irritated.

Making it last

Good care helps a composite filling serve for years.

Daily habits

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth daily, because new decay can form around the edges of any filling. Coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco may gradually stain composite. Avoid chewing ice or using your teeth to open packages, both of which can chip the material or crack the tooth around it.

Checkups and repairs

At checkups the dentist examines fillings for wear, staining or small gaps at the margins. Minor issues can often be polished or touched up without replacing the whole filling. When a composite eventually does need replacement, the dentist will discuss whether another composite or a stronger restoration makes more sense for that tooth at that point.

Planning your appointment

Arranging a filling appointment

Call our Port Dover office to book an examination or a filling appointment. If you already know which tooth needs work from a previous visit, mention it so the right amount of time is reserved on the schedule.

Let the team know if you have had sensitivity, past trouble getting numb, or any worries about the appointment itself.

Composite filling questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long do composite fillings last?

Many last for years, but lifespan depends on the filling’s size and location, the biting forces it faces and how well the area is cleaned. Regular checkups help catch wear, staining or small leaks before they turn into larger problems that need more work.

Can composite replace my silver fillings?

Sometimes. Old amalgam fillings are usually replaced when they are failing, cracked or have decay around them, rather than simply for appearance. The dentist will advise whether replacement is actually needed and which material suits that particular tooth.

Is sensitivity after a filling normal?

Mild sensitivity for a few days is common, especially after a deeper filling. If it is severe, lasts more than a couple of weeks, wakes you at night or the bite feels wrong, call the office so the tooth can be checked.

Will the filling match my tooth?

The dentist selects a shade to blend with your natural tooth, and the match is usually very close. Keep in mind that composite may stain slightly over time and natural teeth can change shade too, especially if you whiten later.

Can I eat right after a composite filling?

Composite is fully hardened with the curing light during the appointment, so you can eat once the numbness wears off. Waiting until feeling returns simply avoids accidentally biting your cheek, lip or tongue while they are still numb.
