When decay or minor damage removes part of a tooth, a filling restores its shape and seals out bacteria. Composite is a tooth-coloured resin that is bonded directly to the tooth and shaped in place. It suits many small to moderate cavities, though large areas of damage may need a stronger restoration.
If you are in Turkey Point and have been told you need a filling, or suspect a cavity, our Port Dover office can assess the tooth. Share any sensitivity or pain you have noticed and when it tends to happen.

Is a filling needed
Sensitivity to sweets or cold, a rough edge your tongue keeps finding, or food catching in one spot can point to decay. Many cavities, however, cause no symptoms until they are fairly large. That is one reason regular checkups and bitewing X-rays are useful; they catch problems before they become painful or harder to repair.
The dentist examines the tooth visually and may use X-rays to see between teeth or beneath existing fillings. Some early enamel changes can be monitored and treated with fluoride rather than filled. When a cavity has broken through enamel, a filling is usually recommended. Ask what the dentist sees and why treatment is suggested.
Choosing composite
Composite bonds to the tooth, so the dentist can often remove less healthy structure than some older techniques required. It can be matched closely to your natural shade, which is helpful for front teeth and visible back teeth. It is also used to repair small chips and close minor gaps in some situations.
Very large cavities, cracked cusps or teeth under heavy biting forces may need an inlay, onlay or crown instead. Grinding habits can also shorten the life of a filling. The dentist will explain the trade-offs and whether composite is likely to hold up well given the size and location of your cavity.
The filling visit
The area is typically numbed before the dentist removes decay. The tooth is kept clean and dry, often with cotton rolls or a thin rubber sheet, because moisture affects bonding. You may feel pressure and hear the instruments, but the procedure should not be painful. Raise a hand if you need a pause.
The composite is placed in layers, with each layer hardened by a curing light. The dentist then shapes the filling to match your bite and polishes it smooth. You will be asked to bite on a thin paper to check for high spots. Let the dentist know if anything feels uneven before you leave.
Aftercare
Wait until the numbness wears off before chewing to avoid biting your cheek or tongue. Some temporary sensitivity to cold or pressure is common and usually settles. If the bite feels high, sensitivity worsens over several days or you notice sharp pain when chewing, contact the office for a check and possible adjustment.
Brush twice daily, clean between teeth and limit frequent sugary snacks to reduce the chance of new decay around the filling edges. Avoid biting very hard objects. If you grind, ask about a night guard. Regular checkups allow the dentist to spot wear or small gaps before they cause bigger problems.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office to arrange an exam or filling appointment. Mention which tooth is bothering you and whether another dentist has already recommended treatment.
If you are a seasonal resident, ask your regular dentist to send recent X-rays. That can help the team plan without repeating images.

Their lifespan depends on size, location, bite forces and home care. Many last for years with good maintenance. The dentist will check them at regular visits and recommend repair or replacement when needed.
Composite performs well for many cavities, especially small to moderate ones. For very large restorations or heavy biting forces, the dentist may suggest a different option. Ask what is best for your tooth.
The dentist selects a shade to blend with your surrounding teeth. Composite can stain slightly over time with coffee, tea or tobacco. Regular cleanings help keep it looking natural.
Mild sensitivity to cold or pressure can occur for a short time. If it worsens, lasts more than a couple of weeks or the bite feels off, call the office so the dentist can take a look.
Sometimes, particularly if the old filling is worn, cracked or has decay around it. Replacing sound fillings purely for appearance is a decision to discuss carefully with the dentist.
Inlays and onlays restore larger cavities while keeping more natural tooth than a crown. Turkey Point patients can learn when they fit best and how they are placed.
Worn, dark or leaking fillings may need replacing. Turkey Point patients can learn how the dentist decides when to replace a filling and which materials suit the tooth.
