Composite resin is a tooth-coloured material that bonds to enamel and dentin. It is commonly used to repair cavities, replace small worn fillings and rebuild minor chips. Because it is placed in layers and hardened with a curing light, the dentist can shape it to match the contours of the tooth.
For anyone in Renton with a cavity diagnosed or suspected, the work is done at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain whether composite is suitable for that particular tooth, what the appointment involves and how long you might expect the filling to serve you with good care.

Spotting a cavity
Early decay usually causes no symptoms. As it grows, you might notice sensitivity to sweets, cold or hot drinks, food catching in one spot, a rough edge or a dark area on a tooth. Pain when biting can also be a sign. Any of these is worth mentioning at a checkup or calling about sooner if they worsen.
During an examination, the dentist looks and feels for soft or discoloured areas and may use X-rays to find decay between teeth or under old fillings. Not every mark is a cavity. Some early changes can be watched or treated with fluoride. The dentist will explain what was found and why a filling is or is not recommended.
Why composite
Composite is often a good choice for small to medium cavities, front teeth and visible areas where appearance matters. Bonding to the tooth can allow a more conservative preparation in some cases. It is also used for repairing chipped edges and closing small gaps when the tooth is otherwise healthy. It can also be repaired fairly easily if it chips.
Very large cavities, teeth under heavy biting force or areas that are hard to keep dry may be better served by an inlay, onlay or crown. People who grind heavily may see faster wear. The dentist will discuss these factors so you can understand why a particular restoration is being proposed for that tooth. Ask about every option.
The appointment
The dentist usually numbs the area with local anaesthetic, then removes the decayed portion of the tooth. The tooth is isolated to keep it dry, which is important for bonding. If the cavity is deep, a protective layer may be placed first. You can signal for a break at any point during the procedure by raising a hand.
Composite is applied in thin layers, each hardened with a blue curing light. The dentist shapes the filling to fit your bite, checks it with marking paper and polishes it smooth. Afterward your lip and cheek may stay numb for a few hours, so be careful with hot drinks and avoid chewing until feeling returns.
Looking after it
Mild sensitivity to cold or pressure is fairly common for a short time after a filling. If the bite feels high, if pain increases or if sensitivity lasts beyond a few weeks, call the office. A small adjustment is often all that is needed, but the dentist should check to rule out other issues with the tooth.
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth every day, since decay can form again at the edges of a filling. Limit frequent sugary snacks and drinks. Avoid chewing ice or hard objects. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor the filling and catch wear or staining before it becomes a real problem.
Planning your appointment
Call 519-583-2929 to arrange an exam or a scheduled filling at our Port Dover office. If a tooth is painful or broken, say so, as that can change the type and timing of the appointment needed.
Let the team know about any allergies or medications, and plan for the numbness to last a while after you leave.

Longevity varies with size, location, bite forces and home care. Many last for years, though they can wear, stain or chip over time. Regular checkups let the dentist assess when a filling might need repair or replacement.
Composite is selected to blend with the surrounding tooth. The match is usually close, though it may change slightly as natural teeth age or stain. Talk to the dentist if appearance is a priority for a front tooth.
The area is usually numbed, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Some sensitivity afterward is common and tends to settle. Let the dentist know during the procedure if you feel discomfort at any point.
Composite is hardened during the appointment, but if you were numbed, wait until feeling returns to avoid biting your lip or cheek. Start with softer foods if the tooth feels tender for a day or so.
Sometimes, when there is a clinical reason or the patient prefers a tooth-coloured option. Replacing a sound filling removes some tooth structure, so the dentist will discuss whether it is advisable for your teeth and goals.
Inlays and onlays repair back teeth that need more than a filling but less than a crown. Renton patients can find out when they fit at our Port Dover office.
Worn, dark or leaking fillings can be replaced when there is a clinical or cosmetic reason. Renton patients can learn how the dentist decides.
