Composite is a tooth-coloured resin that bonds to enamel and dentin. It is commonly used to repair cavities, small chips and worn areas. Because it is placed in layers and shaped directly on the tooth, the dentist can often conserve more natural structure than some other techniques allow, though suitability depends on the size and location of the damage.
If you live at Peacock Point, or arrive each summer and need a filling while in the area, the treatment is carried out at our Port Dover office. The dentist will confirm whether composite is appropriate for your tooth and explain what to expect during and after the appointment.

When it is used
Small to moderate cavities, chipped edges, worn areas near the gumline and replacement of old fillings are frequent reasons for composite. You may have noticed sensitivity, a rough spot with your tongue or food catching. Sometimes a cavity is only discovered on an X-ray, with no symptoms at all, which is why routine exams are helpful.
Very large cavities, teeth with heavy biting forces or teeth that are cracked may need an inlay, onlay or crown for adequate strength. Moisture control is also important for composite, so areas that are difficult to keep dry can be challenging. The dentist will explain why a particular material is recommended for your situation.
The appointment
The area is usually numbed with local anaesthetic. The dentist removes decay or damaged material and cleans the tooth. The surface is then prepared so the composite can bond securely. Keeping the tooth dry during this stage is important, so cotton rolls or a thin rubber barrier may be used to isolate it.
Composite is placed in layers, and each one is hardened with a special curing light. The dentist then shapes the filling to match the natural contours of the tooth and checks your bite. Finally, the surface is polished. You may be asked to bite on thin paper so high spots can be identified and adjusted.
Afterwards
Numbness may last for a few hours, so take care not to bite your lip or cheek. Some people notice mild sensitivity to cold or pressure for a short time after treatment. This usually settles. Avoid very hard or sticky foods on the new filling until numbness has worn off and the tooth feels comfortable.
Contact the office if your bite feels high, the tooth becomes increasingly painful or sensitivity does not ease over time. A high spot can usually be adjusted quickly. Persistent pain may indicate the nerve is irritated and needs reassessment. Do not wait for your next routine visit if symptoms are getting worse rather than better.
Long-term care
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth, since new decay can form around the edges of any filling. Avoid chewing ice, pens or other hard objects. If you grind your teeth, mention it, as a night guard may help protect both fillings and natural teeth from excessive force.
Composite can stain or wear over time, especially with frequent coffee, tea or red wine. Regular examinations allow the dentist to check the edges, look for new decay and polish or repair the filling if needed. Report any chips, rough spots or changes in sensitivity between appointments so they can be checked.

Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Composite can be durable for many cavities, though very large repairs or areas with heavy biting may need other options. The dentist will consider the size and location of the cavity and your bite when recommending a material.
Composite comes in a range of shades and can be closely matched to surrounding teeth. The final appearance depends on the tooth’s natural colour and translucency. It may stain over time, especially with coffee or tea.
Local anaesthetic is usually used so you feel pressure rather than pain. Some sensitivity afterwards is common and generally settles. Let the team know if you are anxious so comfort options can be discussed.
Longevity depends on size, location, bite forces and home care. Many last for years with good maintenance. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor the edges and recommend repair or replacement when needed.
Composite is hardened with a light during the appointment. Wait until numbness wears off before eating so you do not bite your cheek or tongue, and avoid very hard foods on the tooth at first.
Too large for a filling but not needing a full crown? An inlay or onlay may fit. Peacock Point patients can compare these restorations at our Port Dover dental office.
