Composite resin is a tooth-coloured material that bonds to enamel and dentin. It is commonly used to fill cavities, repair small fractures and replace worn edges. Because it is placed in layers and hardened with a curing light, the dentist can shape it to restore the tooth’s contour and match the surrounding shade reasonably closely.
For Normandale residents with a cavity or a small break, our Port Dover team can assess whether a composite filling is a suitable choice. We will explain the size of the problem, the alternatives and what to expect during and after the appointment.

Why a filling
Once decay breaks through enamel, it can advance into the softer layer beneath and toward the nerve. Removing the decayed area and sealing it with a filling helps prevent further damage. Small cavities often cause no pain, which is why they are frequently discovered during routine examinations and x-rays.
A filling also rebuilds the biting surface so you can chew comfortably and food does not catch in the hole. On front teeth, composite can restore appearance after decay or minor chips. The dentist will consider whether the tooth has enough healthy structure for a filling or needs a stronger restoration.
Is composite right?
Composite suits many small to moderate cavities on front and back teeth. It bonds directly to the tooth, which can allow a more conservative preparation. Its colour makes it a popular choice for visible areas, and it can be repaired or added to if a small chip develops later.
Very large cavities, heavy grinding or teeth with cracks may need an inlay, onlay or crown for adequate strength. Moisture control is important during placement, so some locations are more challenging. The dentist will explain the reasons behind any recommendation so you can weigh the options.
The appointment
The area is usually numbed with local anaesthetic. The dentist removes decay and prepares the cavity, then keeps the tooth dry with cotton rolls or a rubber dam. A conditioning gel and bonding agent are applied so the composite can attach firmly to the tooth surface.
Composite is placed in thin layers, each hardened with a blue curing light. Once the tooth is built up, the dentist shapes and polishes the filling and checks your bite with marking paper. Small adjustments ensure the new surface feels natural when you close your teeth together.
Aftercare
Numbness wears off within a few hours, so take care not to bite your cheek or tongue. Mild sensitivity to cold or pressure can occur and usually settles. If the bite feels high or pain increases rather than fading, call the office so the filling can be checked and adjusted if needed.
Brush twice daily, clean between teeth and limit frequent sugary snacks to reduce the chance of new decay around the edges. Composite can stain with coffee, tea or tobacco over time. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor the margins and polish or repair the filling when appropriate.
Planning your appointment
When booking with our Port Dover office, mention whether the tooth is sensitive, painful or simply flagged at a checkup. The team will arrange an appointment with enough time for treatment.
Plan for numbness afterwards and consider a soft meal that day while feeling returns to your lips and cheek.

Longevity varies with filling size, location, bite forces and home care. Many last for years with good maintenance. The dentist will monitor yours at checkups and let you know if it shows signs of wear.
Composite is hardened during the visit, so the filling is set. Wait until numbness fades to avoid biting your cheek, and start with softer foods if the tooth feels tender.
Composite is selected to blend closely with nearby teeth, though a perfect match is not always possible. The dentist will choose a shade suited to your tooth and lighting conditions.
Some sensitivity is common and often fades over days or weeks. If it worsens, lingers or pain occurs when biting, contact the office so the tooth and bite can be checked.
Sometimes, if the existing filling is failing or there is decay. Replacing sound fillings is not always necessary. Discuss the reasons and options with the dentist before deciding.
Inlays and onlays repair damaged back teeth with less reduction than a crown. Normandale patients can learn when they fit and how they are placed in Port Dover.
Worn, leaking or discoloured fillings may need replacing. Normandale patients can learn how the dentist decides, and what replacement involves, at our Port Dover office.
