Composite is a tooth-coloured resin used to rebuild areas damaged by decay or minor fractures. It bonds to the tooth surface and can be shaded to match surrounding enamel, which makes it a common choice for both front and back teeth. Like any filling, it works best when the cavity is caught before it grows large.
Nixon residents who need a filling can have it placed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will confirm the extent of the decay, explain whether composite is suitable for that tooth and walk you through what the appointment will feel like before any work begins.

Finding the problem
Sensitivity to sweets or cold, a rough spot your tongue keeps finding, or food catching between two teeth can all suggest a cavity. Some people notice a dark area or a small hole. Others feel nothing at all. Mention any changes you have noticed, even if they come and go, so the dentist can look closely at that area.
During a checkup the dentist examines each tooth and may use X-rays to see between teeth and under existing fillings where decay can hide. Early decay sometimes appears only on an image. When a cavity is found, the dentist will show you where it is and explain why treatment is being recommended now rather than later.
Is composite right
Composite is well suited to small and medium cavities and to visible teeth where appearance matters. Because it bonds to the tooth, it can sometimes allow a more conservative preparation than older filling materials. It is also useful for repairing small chips or worn edges alongside treatment of decay elsewhere, often in the same appointment.
Very large cavities, teeth with cracks or areas under heavy biting pressure may be better served by an inlay, onlay or crown. The dentist will discuss the trade-offs, including how long each option tends to last and how much natural tooth would be preserved, so you can make an informed decision. Cost and the number of visits can be part of that conversation too.
The appointment
Local anaesthetic is usually used so the tooth is numb before decay is removed. The dentist cleans out the damaged area and keeps the tooth dry, since moisture affects how well composite bonds. Let the team know if you feel discomfort at any point, and they can pause or adjust to help you stay comfortable.
Composite is applied in layers and hardened with a curing light. The dentist then shapes the material, checks your bite and polishes the surface so it feels smooth. You may be asked to tap your teeth together several times. Your bite should feel normal once the numbness wears off later that day, with no high spots.
Aftercare
Avoid chewing on the numb side until feeling returns, to prevent biting your cheek or tongue. Mild sensitivity to cold for a short period can be normal. If your bite feels high, or sensitivity increases instead of fading, call the office. A small adjustment is often all that is needed to make it comfortable, and it is better done early.
Brush twice daily, clean between your teeth and keep regular checkups. Composite can stain slowly from coffee, tea or tobacco, and edges can wear over years. Avoid biting ice or hard objects. Routine examinations allow the dentist to monitor the filling and address small problems before they become larger ones. Limiting sugary snacks protects the edges of the filling as well.
Planning your appointment
Book with our Port Dover office and mention which tooth concerns you. If the cavity was found elsewhere, bring any recent X-rays or notes so the dentist can review them before your appointment.
Plan a soft meal for after the visit and allow time for numbness to wear off before chewing anything firm.

Longevity depends on the size of the filling, its location, your bite and your oral hygiene. Many last for years with good care. Regular checkups let the dentist monitor wear and recommend replacement only when it is actually needed.
Composite is selected to blend with your natural shade. It may not stay identical forever, since both the tooth and filling can stain over time. If appearance is a priority, discuss colour expectations with the dentist beforehand.
Some short-term sensitivity to cold or pressure can occur and usually fades. If it worsens, lasts several weeks or your bite feels uneven, contact the office so the dentist can check the filling and adjust it if needed.
Sometimes, if there is a clinical reason such as decay or a fracture, or if appearance matters to you. The dentist will explain whether replacing a sound filling is advisable for your particular tooth, since removal also takes some healthy structure.
Composite is hardened during the visit, so the filling itself is set. It is still wise to wait until numbness wears off before chewing, to avoid accidentally biting your lip, cheek or tongue. Lukewarm drinks are a safe choice meanwhile.
Inlays and onlays repair back teeth too damaged for a filling but not ready for a crown. Nixon patients can learn when they fit and how they are made.
Dark, worn or leaking fillings can sometimes be replaced with tooth-coloured material. Nixon patients can learn when replacement makes sense and when to wait.
