Caring for Lynedoch patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Lynedoch patientsRepair that blends in
Composite is a resin material that bonds to tooth structure and can be shaded to blend with the enamel around it. It is commonly used to repair cavities, replace worn fillings and rebuild small chips. Because it bonds to the tooth, the dentist may be able to remove less healthy structure than some older techniques required.
If a checkup has found decay or you have a filling that needs replacing, Lynedoch patients can arrange treatment at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain whether composite is suitable for the size and location of the repair, or whether a stronger restoration should be considered.

Is composite suitable
Small to moderate cavities on front and back teeth are often good candidates for composite. Very large areas of missing tooth, especially on molars that take heavy chewing forces, may be better served by an onlay or crown. Ask the dentist why composite is recommended for your tooth and what alternatives exist.
Clenching, grinding or chewing hard objects can wear or chip any filling. If you have these habits, mention them, since they may influence the material choice and whether a night guard is advisable. Understanding the forces on a tooth helps the dentist recommend a restoration with a reasonable chance of lasting.
The procedure
Local freezing is commonly used to keep the area comfortable. The dentist removes decay or the old filling and keeps the tooth dry, which is important for bonding. Let the team know if you feel discomfort at any point. A brief pause or more freezing can usually be arranged.
Composite is placed in layers, each hardened with a special light. The dentist then shapes the filling to fit your bite and polishes it smooth. You will be asked to bite on paper to check contact. If your bite feels uneven once the freezing wears off, call the office for a quick adjustment.
After treatment
A filled tooth may be sensitive to cold, pressure or sweet foods for a short period, especially after a deeper repair. This usually settles gradually. Avoid chewing on the numb side until feeling returns to prevent biting your cheek or tongue. Over-the-counter pain relief may help if it is safe for you.
Contact the office if sensitivity worsens, lasts several weeks, or if you have throbbing pain or swelling. A high spot on the filling can also cause soreness when biting. These issues are often simple to address, but they should be reviewed rather than ignored in the hope they resolve.
Making it last
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth to reduce the chance of new decay around the edges. Avoid using teeth as tools and be cautious with very hard foods. Composite can pick up stains over time from coffee, tea or tobacco, so regular hygiene visits help keep it looking its best.
At checkups the dentist examines the edges of fillings for wear, chips or new decay. X-rays may be used to look between teeth. Fillings do not last forever, and spotting an issue early usually allows a simpler repair than waiting for a larger problem to develop.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office to arrange treatment. If you already know which tooth needs work, mention it, along with any sensitivity or pain you have noticed.
Let the team know about medicines, allergies and any previous difficulty with freezing so the visit can be planned well.

Lifespan varies with the size of the filling, your bite, habits and home care. Many last for years. Regular checkups help identify wear or decay around the edges before larger repairs are needed.
Often, if the old filling is worn, cracked or has decay around it. Replacing a sound filling purely for appearance is a decision to discuss with the dentist, who can explain the benefits and risks.
Composite is shaded to blend with your natural tooth colour. It may not change colour with whitening, so if you plan to whiten, mention it beforehand so the shade can be chosen accordingly.
Some sensitivity to cold or biting is common and usually fades. If it is severe, lasts weeks or comes with throbbing pain, contact the office so the tooth can be checked.
Composite hardens during the appointment, but wait until freezing wears off before chewing to avoid biting your cheek or tongue. Start with softer foods if the tooth feels tender.
Too much damage for a filling but not enough for a crown? Lynedoch patients can ask our Port Dover dentist whether an inlay or onlay could restore the tooth.
Dark, worn or leaking fillings can sometimes be replaced with tooth-coloured materials. Lynedoch patients can weigh when replacement makes sense with our Port Dover dentist.
