Composite is a tooth-coloured resin placed in layers and hardened with a curing light. Because it bonds to enamel and dentin, it can often repair a cavity while keeping more of the natural tooth than older techniques required. It suits many small and medium cavities, though very large areas or heavy biting surfaces may call for a different restoration.
If a checkup or a sore tooth points to decay, Long Point patients can have it assessed at our Port Dover office and discuss whether a composite filling is the right fit for that particular tooth.

Finding the cavity
Some people notice sensitivity to sweets or cold, a rough spot felt by the tongue, food catching in a new place or a dark mark on a tooth. Others feel nothing at all, and the cavity is discovered at a routine exam. Waiting for pain can mean decay has already grown closer to the nerve.
The dentist examines the tooth visually and may use X-rays to see between teeth or under existing fillings. The size, depth and location of decay determine whether a filling is suitable. If decay is very deep, the dentist may discuss the possibility that the nerve could be affected and what that would mean for treatment.
Is composite right?
Composite works well for front teeth where appearance matters and for many back-tooth cavities of moderate size. Its bonding allows conservative preparation, and the shade can be matched to surrounding enamel. Many people appreciate that a composite repair is difficult to spot during conversation or when smiling.
Very large cavities, cracked teeth or areas under heavy grinding forces may be better served by an onlay or crown that covers and protects more of the tooth. The dentist will explain why a particular option is suggested and what each might mean for longevity, future maintenance and the number of visits involved.
On the day
Freezing is used when needed so the tooth is comfortable. The dentist removes decayed tooth structure and isolates the area to keep it dry, because moisture can affect bonding. A conditioning agent and bonding layer are applied to help the composite attach firmly to the prepared tooth surfaces.
Composite is placed in increments and hardened with a curing light, then shaped to match your bite and polished smooth. The dentist checks how your teeth meet and adjusts any high spots. Once the filling is set, it is hardened immediately, though numbness from freezing may last a while longer.
Aftercare
Wait for freezing to wear off before chewing to avoid biting your lip or cheek. Some temporary sensitivity to cold or pressure can occur, especially with deeper fillings, and often settles. If the bite feels high, or sensitivity persists or worsens, contact the office so the filling can be checked and adjusted.
Brush twice daily, clean between teeth and keep up with checkups so the edges of the filling can be monitored. Composite can stain over time with coffee, tea or tobacco, and it can chip under heavy forces. If you grind your teeth, ask whether a night guard would help protect your restorations.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office if you have sensitivity, a rough spot or have been told you need a filling. The team can arrange an examination and explain whether composite is recommended.
If another dentist diagnosed the cavity, bring or request recent X-rays so the tooth can be compared and unnecessary repeats avoided.

Longevity varies with size, location, bite forces and home care. Many last for years, but none are permanent. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor edges and spot wear or new decay early.
The material is hardened during the appointment, but it is wise to wait until freezing wears off to avoid biting your cheek or tongue. Start with softer foods if the tooth feels tender.
Mild sensitivity to cold or biting can occur and often fades. If it lasts beyond a short period, increases or the tooth aches on its own, contact the office for a review.
Composite shades are chosen to blend with your tooth, and most fillings are hard to notice. Exact results depend on the tooth’s natural colour and translucency. Composites can also stain slightly over time.
Sometimes, if there is a clinical reason such as decay, cracks or failing edges, or for appearance. The dentist will assess the existing fillings and discuss benefits and limits before recommending replacement.
When a cavity is too big for a filling but a crown seems excessive, an inlay or onlay may help. Long Point patients can compare options at our Port Dover office.
Dark, chipped or leaking fillings can be assessed and, when needed, replaced. Long Point patients can learn how decisions are made at our Port Dover office.
