Composite is a tooth-coloured resin that bonds to enamel and dentin. It is commonly used to repair cavities, replace worn or broken areas and close small chips. Because it is placed in layers and hardened with a curing light, the dentist can shape it to restore the tooth’s contour and blend it with neighbouring teeth.
When a Langton patient has a cavity, the exam at our Port Dover office will establish how large it is and whether a composite filling is a suitable repair. For larger damage, the dentist may discuss an inlay, onlay or crown instead, and will explain the reasons behind that suggestion.

Is composite right?
Composite is often chosen for cavities on front and back teeth, small fractures, worn edges and areas near the gumline. Because it bonds to the tooth, less healthy structure may need to be removed than with some older filling materials. It can also be repaired or added to later without replacing the whole restoration, which keeps future work simpler.
Very large cavities, teeth that bear heavy grinding forces or areas that are difficult to keep dry during placement may be less predictable with composite. In those cases the dentist may recommend a different material or a stronger restoration that covers more of the tooth. Ask which factors in your own mouth influence the choice and why.
The appointment
The dentist typically numbs the area with local anaesthetic, then removes the decay and any weakened tooth structure around it. The tooth is cleaned and kept dry, sometimes with a thin rubber sheet that isolates it from saliva. A bonding agent is then applied so the composite can adhere firmly to the prepared surfaces of the tooth.
Composite is placed in thin layers, each hardened with a blue curing light. The dentist then shapes and polishes the filling and checks your bite with marking paper. Tell them if anything feels high or uneven when you bite down, even slightly, since a small adjustment before you leave can prevent soreness later in the week.
Afterwards
Avoid chewing on the numb side until feeling returns, so you do not bite your cheek or tongue. Composite is fully hardened when you leave, so you can eat once sensation is back. Mild tenderness of the gum around the tooth may be felt for a day or two and usually settles on its own.
Some teeth are sensitive to cold or biting for a short time after a filling, especially when the cavity was deep and close to the nerve. This generally improves over days to a few weeks. Call if sensitivity worsens or lasts, or if pain lingers long after hot or cold, as the tooth may need to be reassessed.
Making it last
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth each day, since new decay can form at the edges of any filling. Limit frequent sugary snacks and drinks, including sweetened coffee sipped through a long workday. Avoid biting hard objects such as ice or pen caps. If you grind, ask about a night guard to reduce wear and chipping.
At routine checkups, the dentist examines fillings for staining at the edges, chips, wear and new decay. Small problems can often be repaired before they become larger and more involved. Report a filling that feels rough, catches floss or has broken, rather than waiting for it to cause pain, since early attention is usually simpler.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office if you have a cavity that needs repair or a tooth that feels sensitive. The team can arrange an exam or treatment appointment that suits your schedule and explain what the visit will involve.
Let the team know if you have had trouble getting numb at previous visits, so they can plan the appointment with that in mind.

Lifespan varies with the size of the filling, your bite, grinding habits, diet and home care. Many last for years. Regular exams allow the dentist to spot wear or new decay early so the filling can be repaired or replaced when needed.
Sometimes. Replacement is usually recommended when a filling is broken, leaking or has decay around it. Removing a sound filling purely for appearance involves trade-offs, including the loss of some tooth structure, which the dentist can explain during an exam.
Composite comes in many shades, and the dentist selects one to blend with your tooth. Like natural teeth, composite can pick up stains over time from coffee, tea or tobacco. Whitening does not change the colour of existing fillings.
Local anaesthetic is normally used, so you should feel pressure and vibration rather than pain. Tell the dentist right away if you feel discomfort during treatment. Mild sensitivity afterward is common and usually resolves within days or weeks.
Composite is hardened before you leave, but wait until the numbness wears off so you do not bite your lip or cheek. Start with softer foods if the tooth feels tender, and call the office if your bite feels uneven once sensation returns.
Inlays and onlays restore back teeth that are too damaged for a filling but may not need a crown. Langton patients can learn when they suit and what to expect.
Worn, leaking or discoloured fillings may need replacement. Langton patients can learn when replacement is advised and what material options exist.
