Composite is a resin material that can be shaded to resemble natural enamel and bonded directly to the tooth. It is commonly used to repair cavities, replace small sections of broken tooth and restore worn areas. Whether it suits a particular tooth depends on the size of the repair and the forces it will face.
If a cavity has been found and you live in La Salette, the filling appointment takes place at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain why composite is suggested, how long the visit may take and what you can expect to feel afterward.

Deciding on composite
Small and moderate cavities on front and back teeth are often good candidates for composite. The dentist considers how much healthy tooth remains, whether the area can be kept dry during placement and how heavily you bite on that tooth. These factors affect how well the filling is likely to hold up.
If a large portion of the tooth is missing, an inlay, onlay or crown may provide better strength. Ask the dentist to explain why composite is or is not recommended for your tooth. Understanding the trade-offs helps you make a decision you are comfortable with.
The appointment
Most fillings begin with local anaesthetic to keep the tooth comfortable. The dentist removes the decayed or weakened portion and cleans the area. A thin barrier may be placed to keep saliva away, since composite bonds best to a clean, dry surface. You can raise a hand at any point if you need a pause.
The composite is applied in layers, each hardened with a special light. The dentist then shapes the filling to match your bite and polishes it smooth. You will be asked to bite gently on a thin paper so any high spots can be adjusted before you leave the chair.
Right afterward
Avoid chewing on the numb side until feeling returns, so you do not bite your cheek or tongue. Children in particular should be watched during this time. Composite is hardened before you leave, so you can usually eat once sensation is back, starting gently on the treated side.
Some sensitivity to cold or biting pressure can occur for a short time, especially after deeper fillings. If it worsens, lasts more than a couple of weeks or the bite feels high, contact the office. A small adjustment is often all that is needed to make the tooth feel comfortable.
Long-term care
New decay can form along the margins of any filling, so brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between teeth remain important. Composite can stain over time with coffee, tea or tobacco. Limiting frequent sugary snacks also helps protect both the filling and your natural teeth.
During checkups, the dentist examines fillings for chips, wear, staining or gaps at the edges. X-rays may help assess areas between teeth. Small issues can sometimes be repaired rather than replaced. Grinding at night can shorten a filling’s life, so mention it if you clench or grind.
Planning your appointment
Book your filling at our Port Dover office and confirm which tooth is being treated. Ask how long the visit is expected to take so you can plan your day and travel.
Eat beforehand if appropriate, since your mouth may be numb for a few hours after the appointment.

Composite works well for many cavities, though very large repairs or areas under heavy biting force may suit other materials. The dentist will consider the size and location of the cavity when recommending a restoration.
Lifespan varies with the size of the filling, your bite, grinding habits and home care. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor fillings and address small problems before they become larger ones.
Composite is shaded to blend with your natural tooth colour. Matching is usually very close, though fillings may stain differently from enamel over time. Whitening does not change the colour of existing composite.
Mild, temporary sensitivity is common, particularly after deeper fillings. If it worsens, lingers or the bite feels uneven, contact the office so the dentist can check the tooth.
The material is hardened before you leave. Wait until numbness wears off so you do not accidentally bite your cheek, then begin with softer foods if the tooth feels tender.
Inlays and onlays sit between a filling and a crown in size. La Salette patients can learn when they are suggested, how they are made and why they save tooth.
Dark or worn fillings are not always a problem, but some need replacing. La Salette patients can learn how the dentist decides and which options may suit.
