Composite is a tooth-coloured resin material bonded directly to the tooth after decay or damage is removed. It can be shaded to match surrounding enamel and works well for many small to moderate cavities on front and back teeth. Its durability depends on the size of the filling, its location and the forces of your bite.
When a cavity or worn spot is found at a checkup, Glen Meyer patients can have a composite repair discussed and placed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain whether composite is the right choice or whether a larger restoration would protect the tooth better.

When composite fits
Composite is often suitable for small and medium cavities, chipped edges and areas worn away near the gum line. Very large fillings in back teeth that take heavy chewing loads may be better served by an inlay, onlay or crown. The dentist will consider how much healthy natural tooth remains, and how the tooth is loaded, before recommending a material.
Each filling material has its own strengths and limitations relating to appearance, wear resistance and placement technique. Composite needs a clean, dry working area, which can be harder to achieve in some spots near the gums. Ask the dentist why composite is being suggested for your tooth and what reasonable alternatives might exist for you to consider.
Placing the filling
The area is usually numbed with local anaesthetic, then decay and weakened tooth structure are removed. The tooth is cleaned and treated so the composite can bond securely to it. Tell the dentist if you feel discomfort at any point during the procedure, as additional anaesthetic or a short pause can often make the rest of the appointment more comfortable.
Composite is applied in thin layers, and each one is hardened with a special curing light. The dentist then shapes and polishes the filling and checks your bite with marking paper. If your bite feels high or uneven once the numbness wears off later that day, call the office, as a quick adjustment is usually simple to arrange.
After your visit
Some sensitivity to cold or biting pressure for a short time after a filling is common, especially when the cavity was deep. It typically fades over days or a few weeks. Avoid chewing on the numb side until normal feeling returns, so you do not bite your cheek or tongue. Brush and clean between your teeth as you normally would.
Contact the office if pain increases, keeps you awake or lingers long after hot or cold exposure, or if your bite feels off. These signs may mean the nerve is irritated or the filling needs a small adjustment. Reporting them early helps the dentist assess whether any further care is needed before a minor issue becomes a bigger one.
Making it last
Brushing twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between teeth help prevent new decay forming around the edges of a filling. Limiting frequent sugary snacks and drinks lowers the risk further. If you grind or clench your teeth, ask whether a night guard would help protect both the composite and your natural enamel from heavy wear.
At regular exams the dentist checks fillings for wear, staining, chipping or small gaps at the margins. Composite may need polishing, repair or eventual replacement over the years. Catching small issues early generally allows simpler repairs and reduces the chance of decay developing unnoticed underneath an older filling. Mention any rough edges you can feel with your tongue between visits.
Planning your appointment
If a cavity was found at a recent exam, or you have noticed a rough spot or new sensitivity, call our Port Dover office. The team can arrange an examination or a treatment appointment as appropriate.
Mention any anxiety about numbing, or past difficulty getting a tooth fully frozen, so the dentist can plan the appointment with that in mind.

Composite can be shade-matched to blend with the surrounding teeth. How closely it matches depends on the tooth, the lighting and how much staining occurs over time from coffee, tea or tobacco. The dentist can discuss the expected appearance for your particular tooth.
Sometimes, if there is a clinical reason or you prefer a different look. Replacing an intact filling does remove some additional tooth structure, so the dentist will discuss the potential benefits and risks with you before recommending that a sound filling be changed.
Lifespan varies with the size and location of the filling, your bite forces, grinding habits and home care. Regular checkups help monitor wear and edges over time. Some fillings will eventually need repair or replacement, and catching that early keeps it simpler.
Mild, short-term sensitivity is common, especially after deeper fillings, and it usually fades over the following days or weeks. If it worsens instead, lingers after hot or cold drinks or wakes you at night, contact the office for an assessment.
Composite is fully hardened during the appointment, but wait until the numbness wears off before chewing so you do not injure your cheek or tongue. Start with softer foods if the tooth feels tender, and avoid very hard foods on that side for a day.
Inlays and onlays repair damage too large for a filling but not severe enough for a crown. Glen Meyer patients can learn when they fit and how they are placed.
Dark, worn or leaking fillings can sometimes be replaced with tooth-coloured materials. Glen Meyer patients can learn when replacement helps and when not.
