Repairing decay discreetly

A small cavity treated early usually means a simpler repair.

Composite fillings are made from a tooth-coloured resin that is bonded into a prepared cavity and shaped to restore the tooth. They are commonly used for decay, small fractures and worn areas. Because the material can be shaded, the repair often blends in well, whether it is on a front tooth or a back molar.

Patients from Boston can have cavities assessed and filled at our Port Dover office. If you have noticed sensitivity, a rough spot or food catching between teeth, mention it when you call so the team can look closely at that area during your visit and plan enough time.

Finding the problem

Cavities can be noticeable or completely silent.

  • Symptoms that suggest a cavity

Sensitivity to sweets, cold or hot drinks, a sharp edge felt with the tongue, a dark spot or floss that catches and shreds between two teeth can all point to decay. Pain on biting is also worth mentioning. These signs do not always mean a cavity, since cracks and gum recession can cause similar sensations, but they are good reasons to have the tooth examined.

  • Decay found at a checkup

Many cavities cause no symptoms at all, especially early on or between teeth where you cannot see them. They are often found during routine exams or on x-rays. Treating them while they are small usually means less tooth needs to be removed, and the filling has more healthy structure around it for support, which helps it last.

Choosing materials

Composite suits many repairs, though not every situation.

Where composite works well

Composite bonds directly to the tooth, which can allow a more conservative preparation than some older materials. It is suitable for many small to moderate cavities, chipped edges and areas near the gumline. Its natural appearance makes it a popular choice for visible teeth. The dentist will explain how well it is expected to perform in your particular tooth.

When another option may be suggested

Very large cavities, teeth that take heavy biting forces or teeth with cracks running through them may be better served by an inlay, onlay or crown. Ask the dentist why a specific option is being recommended and what the trade-offs are in strength, expected lifespan and the amount of natural tooth that would be involved in each approach.

The filling visit

Most composite fillings are completed in a single appointment.

  1. Numbing and preparing the tooth

The area is usually numbed first so you stay comfortable. The dentist removes the decay and prepares the tooth, keeping as much healthy structure as possible. The tooth is kept dry during the process, often with cotton rolls or a thin rubber sheet, because moisture can affect how well the material bonds to the tooth surface.

  2. Placing and shaping the filling

Composite is placed in layers, each hardened with a blue curing light. The dentist then shapes the filling to match your bite and polishes it smooth. You may be asked to bite on thin marking paper to check for high spots. Let the dentist know if anything feels uneven or catches before you leave, since it is easy to adjust then.

Aftercare

A little attention afterward keeps the new filling comfortable.

The first day or two

Avoid chewing until numbness wears off so you do not bite your cheek or tongue by accident. Some mild sensitivity to temperature or pressure can occur and often eases over several days. If the bite feels high, sensitivity worsens or real pain develops, contact the office so the filling can be checked and adjusted rather than waiting it out.

Protecting fillings over time

Composite can stain gradually with coffee, tea or tobacco, and it can chip if used on very hard objects like ice or pen caps. Brush, floss and attend regular checkups so the edges of each filling can be monitored. If you grind your teeth at night, mention it, as a night guard may help protect your fillings and natural enamel.

Planning your appointment

Booking from Boston

Phone our Port Dover office to arrange an exam or filling appointment. Mention which tooth bothers you and how long it has been sensitive, so the team can plan enough time and examine that area closely.

Let the team know if you are anxious about numbing or dental work, so comfort options can be discussed before the visit itself.

Composite filling questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Do composite fillings match my teeth?

Composite is shaded to blend with the surrounding tooth, so it is usually much less noticeable than metal fillings. The dentist selects a shade during the appointment to suit your natural tooth colour, sometimes layering more than one shade.

How long do composite fillings last?

Longevity depends on the size of the filling, your bite, grinding habits and home care. Regular checkups let the dentist monitor fillings over the years and repair or replace them when the edges begin to wear or leak.

Can I eat right after getting a filling?

Composite is fully hardened before you leave, but wait until numbness wears off to avoid biting your cheek or tongue. Start with softer foods if the tooth feels a little tender, and return to normal eating as it settles.

Is it normal to have sensitivity afterward?

Some mild sensitivity is common and often fades within days or a few weeks. If it is severe, worsening or your bite feels uneven, contact the office so the dentist can check the filling and make any adjustment that is needed.

Can old metal fillings be replaced with composite?

Sometimes, particularly if the existing filling is failing or there is decay underneath it. The dentist will assess whether replacement is advisable for each tooth and explain the options, since sound fillings do not always need to be changed.
