Replacing teeth with removable options

The right denture depends on the teeth you still have.

A complete denture replaces all the teeth in an upper or lower arch, resting on the gums and underlying bone. A partial denture fills gaps between remaining natural teeth, usually held by clasps or attachments. Each brings back chewing and appearance, but each also takes some getting used to and needs ongoing adjustment.

If you live in the countryside around Vanessa, our Port Dover office can assess your mouth, explain which type suits your situation and plan the series of appointments a denture usually needs. Knowing the number of visits ahead of time makes it much easier to plan around work, harvest and travel.

Choosing a type

Your remaining teeth and gums guide the decision.

When a complete denture is considered

A complete denture is used when all teeth in an arch are missing or must be removed. Upper complete dentures often stay in well with suction against the palate, while lower ones can be less stable because of tongue movement and a smaller supporting surface. The dentist will discuss what to expect with each arch and whether implants could add stability.

When a partial makes sense

If you still have healthy teeth, a partial denture can replace the gaps while keeping those teeth in place. The supporting teeth must be strong enough to hold clasps, and they may need fillings or other work first. The dentist will also compare partials with options such as bridges or implants, where those are realistic for your mouth.

Making the denture

Dentures are built over several careful visits.

  1. Impressions and bite records

The process typically starts with an examination and impressions of your gums and any remaining teeth. Bite records show how your jaws relate to each other when you close. You can discuss tooth shade, shape and how you would like your smile to look, keeping in mind what suits your face, your age and your own natural features.

  2. Try-in and delivery

A try-in lets you see and feel the arrangement of teeth before the denture is finished. Speak up about appearance, speech or bite at this stage, when changes are much easier to make. At delivery, the dentist checks the fit and shows you how to insert, remove and clean the denture safely without bending clasps or dropping it.

Adjusting to it

Give yourself time while your mouth adapts.

Eating and speaking

Start with soft foods cut into small pieces and chew on both sides at once to keep the denture balanced. Speech may feel different at first; reading aloud for a few minutes each day helps. Many people need a few weeks before a new denture feels natural, and lower dentures may take longer to master than upper ones.

Sore spots and adjustments

Sore spots are common in the early weeks. Do not try to file, bend or pad the denture yourself. Call the office and book an adjustment, since small changes to the fit can make a large difference to comfort. Removing the denture overnight usually gives gum tissue a rest, unless the dentist gives you different advice.

Long-term care

Dentures and gums both change over time.

  • Cleaning and storage

Brush the denture daily with a soft brush and a cleaner made for dentures, rather than regular toothpaste, which can scratch the surface. Clean it over a towel or a basin of water so a drop does not crack it. Store it moist when it is out of the mouth. Brush any natural teeth, your gums and your tongue carefully as well.

  • Regular checks and relines

The bone and gums under a denture slowly reshape, so fit gradually loosens over the years. Regular checkups allow the dentist to look at your mouth tissues and the denture itself. A reline or replacement may eventually be recommended. Report persistent sores, clicking or looseness rather than relying on more and more adhesive to hold it in place.

Planning your appointment

Planning denture visits from Vanessa

Call our Port Dover office to book a denture consultation. Ask how many appointments to expect from start to finish, so you can plan rides, time away from work and any busy seasons in advance.

If you already wear a denture, bring it along so the dentist can assess its fit, its condition and how your gums are responding.

Denture questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does it take to get used to dentures?

Many people settle in over several weeks, though everyone is different. Eating soft foods, practising speech and returning for adjustments all help. Lower dentures can take longer to feel secure because the tongue and cheeks move them more.

Can I sleep with my dentures in?

Most dentists recommend removing them overnight to rest the gums and reduce the risk of irritation and fungal infection. Store them moist while out. Follow the specific advice your dentist gives, since some situations call for a different approach.

Do partial dentures damage my natural teeth?

A well-fitted partial and careful cleaning help protect the supporting teeth. Poor hygiene around clasps can lead to decay or gum problems, so thorough brushing, cleaning the partial daily and keeping up regular checkups are important.

How often do dentures need replacing?

It depends on wear and the changes happening in your mouth. Many dentures need relining after some years and eventual replacement as teeth wear and gums reshape. The dentist will advise you at regular visits rather than on a fixed schedule.

Is denture adhesive necessary?

A well-fitting denture often needs little or none. Some people like a small amount for extra confidence. If you find yourself relying on more and more adhesive, the fit has probably changed and should be checked by the dentist.
