Full and partial replacement

The right denture depends on the teeth you still have.

A complete denture replaces all the teeth in an upper or lower arch, resting on the gums and the bone beneath. A partial denture fills gaps between remaining natural teeth, usually held in place with clasps or attachments. Both can restore chewing and appearance, but they feel different and involve different planning and care.

Patients from Townsend can come to our Port Dover office to discuss which type suits them. The dentist will examine your remaining teeth and gums, talk about your expectations for eating, speaking and appearance, and explain how the fitting process usually unfolds over a series of appointments.

Comparing the options

Each type serves a different situation.

When a complete denture is considered

A complete denture may be suggested when all the teeth in an arch are missing or cannot be kept because of decay, gum disease or damage. It relies on suction, muscle control and the shape of the ridge for stability. Lower complete dentures are often harder to keep steady, which is worth discussing before you decide.

When a partial denture makes sense

If healthy teeth remain, a partial denture can replace the missing ones while keeping your own teeth in place. Those natural teeth help anchor the partial and support chewing. The dentist will check whether the anchor teeth are strong enough and whether any need treatment first, such as fillings or gum care.

Preparing the mouth

A stable foundation helps the denture fit well.

Treat remaining teeth and gums first

Decay, loose teeth and gum inflammation should be addressed before a denture is made, since they can affect how it fits and how long it lasts. X-rays may help the dentist assess the bone and roots. Ask which treatments are needed and how they fit into the overall timeline, so you can plan around them.

Planning for extractions and healing

When teeth need to be removed, the gums and bone change shape quite noticeably as they heal over the following months. The dentist will discuss whether an immediate denture is placed on the day of extraction, so you are never without teeth, or whether you wait for healing first. Immediate dentures usually need adjustments or relines later as the tissues settle.

Fitting appointments

Several visits help get shape, bite and appearance right.

  1. Impressions, bite records and try-ins

The process usually includes impressions, measurements of how your jaws meet and a try-in where you can see the shape and shade of the teeth before the denture is finished. Speak up during the try-in if anything about the appearance or bite feels off. Changes are much easier at this stage than afterwards.

  2. Collecting and adjusting the denture

When the denture is ready, the dentist will check its fit, comfort and bite, and show you how to put it in and take it out. Expect a few follow-up visits for adjustments, since sore spots often appear in the first weeks of wear. Do not try to file or adjust the denture yourself; bring it in so pressure points can be relieved precisely.

Living with dentures

Patience and good habits make adapting easier.

  • Adjusting to eating and speaking

Start with soft foods cut into small pieces and chew on both sides at once to keep the denture stable. Speaking may feel strange at first, and reading aloud can help you adjust. Extra saliva and mild soreness are common early on, but persistent pain or ulcers should be checked by the dentist.

  • Cleaning and long-term reviews

Remove and clean your dentures daily with a soft brush and a cleaner recommended by the team, and brush any remaining natural teeth carefully, especially around clasps. Most people are advised to take dentures out overnight. Keep regular checkups, since the gums and bone change over time and fit may need adjusting.

Questions about complete and partial dentures

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How do I know whether I need a complete or partial denture?

It depends on how many healthy teeth remain and their condition. If some sound teeth can be kept, a partial denture is often considered. The dentist will examine your mouth and explain the options and trade-offs.

How long does it take to get used to a new denture?

Many people need several weeks to adapt to eating and speaking. Sore spots and extra saliva are common at first. Follow-up adjustments help, so contact the office if discomfort persists rather than putting up with it.

Can a partial denture damage my natural teeth?

Clasps and trapped food can increase the risk of decay or gum problems around the anchor teeth if cleaning is not thorough. Careful daily brushing around those teeth, removing the partial at night and regular checkups all help keep them healthy.

Should I sleep with my dentures in?

Most people are advised to remove dentures overnight to let the gums rest and to clean them properly. The dentist may give different advice in certain situations, such as right after an extraction.

Will my dentures need to be replaced eventually?

Often, yes. The gums and bone change with time and the teeth on a denture wear. Relines can improve fit for a while, but a new denture may eventually be recommended. Regular checkups help track this.
