Replacing missing teeth

The right denture depends on the teeth you still have.

A complete denture replaces all the teeth in an arch, resting on the gums and bone. A partial denture fills gaps between remaining natural teeth, usually held by clasps or other attachments. Each has its own fitting process, adjustment period and maintenance needs, and the best choice depends on your mouth, health and preferences.

Peacock Point patients, including those who spend only part of the year near the lake, can be assessed for dentures at our Port Dover office. Because dentures usually take several appointments, plan the timing with the team so fittings and adjustments are not interrupted by seasonal moves.

Assessment

Understand your mouth before choosing a denture.

Evaluate remaining teeth and gums

The dentist checks the health of any remaining teeth, the gums and the bone that will support the denture. X-rays may be taken. Teeth with decay or gum disease may need treatment or removal first. This assessment helps determine whether a partial denture is possible or whether a complete denture is more appropriate.

Discuss your goals and concerns

Talk about what matters most to you, whether that is chewing, appearance, speech or comfort. Mention any previous denture experiences, good or bad. If you have concerns about stability, ask about implant-supported options as a comparison. Clear priorities help the dentist recommend a design that suits how you live and eat.

Comparing options

Weigh the trade-offs of each type.

Complete dentures

A complete denture relies on suction and the shape of the gums for stability, particularly in the upper jaw. Lower complete dentures can be more challenging to keep steady. If teeth need to be removed, ask whether an immediate denture placed on the day of extraction is suitable, and what adjustments will be needed as the gums heal and shrink.

Partial dentures

A partial denture fills gaps and can help prevent remaining teeth from drifting. Frameworks may be metal or more flexible materials, each with different feel, durability and appearance. Clasps attach to natural teeth, so those teeth need to stay healthy. Ask how the partial would be repaired or added to if another tooth is lost later.

Fitting process

Expect several visits to get the fit right.

  1. Impressions and measurements

Impressions or scans record the shape of your gums and any remaining teeth. Measurements of your bite and the space between your jaws guide the denture’s height and tooth position. You may be asked to choose tooth shade and shape. These steps take time, but careful records contribute to a denture that looks natural and feels stable.

  2. Try-in and final placement

A try-in stage often allows you to see and feel the denture before it is finalized. Speak up about appearance, bite or comfort at this point, since changes are easier before completion. At the final fitting, the dentist checks for pressure spots and shows you how to insert, remove and clean the denture correctly.

Adjusting

Adapting to dentures takes patience and follow-up.

  • Give yourself time to adapt

New dentures can feel bulky, and speaking or eating may take practice. Start with soft foods cut into small pieces and chew on both sides. Sore spots are common in the first weeks and can usually be eased with adjustments. Do not try to file or adjust the denture yourself; contact the office instead.

  • Keep dentures and gums healthy

Remove dentures daily to rest the gums, unless instructed otherwise. Clean them with a denture brush and appropriate cleaner, and keep them moist when out of the mouth. Brush any natural teeth carefully, especially around clasps. Regular check-ups allow the fit to be reviewed, as gums and bone change over time.

Denture questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does it take to get dentures?

The process usually involves several appointments for assessment, impressions, bite records, try-in and final fitting. The timeline depends on whether extractions or other treatment are needed first. The dentist can outline the expected sequence for your situation.

Will dentures feel natural?

There is an adjustment period. Most people need time to get used to speaking and eating with dentures. Sore spots can usually be relieved with adjustments. Comfort generally improves with practice and follow-up visits.

Can I sleep in my dentures?

Most people are advised to remove dentures overnight to let the gums rest and to allow cleaning. Follow the dentist’s specific instructions, which may differ in the first days after extractions or for particular circumstances.

What if my partial denture clasp loosens?

Contact the office rather than bending it yourself, which can damage the denture or the supporting tooth. The dentist can assess whether the clasp can be adjusted or repaired.

Do dentures need to be replaced?

Over time, gums and bone change shape and teeth on dentures wear. Relines, repairs or replacement may be needed. Regular check-ups help identify when the fit or function is no longer adequate.
