Full arch or a few teeth

Choosing between a complete and partial denture starts with the teeth you still have.

A complete denture replaces all the teeth in an upper or lower arch, while a partial denture fills gaps among remaining natural teeth. Each type has its own fitting process, comfort considerations and maintenance needs, and the right choice depends on the condition of your gums, bone and any teeth that remain.

Patients from Cultus can come to our Port Dover office to talk through denture options. We will examine your mouth, explain the stages involved in making and fitting a denture and help you understand what adjusting to it is likely to feel like during the first weeks.

Assessing your mouth

An examination shapes which type of denture makes sense.

  • Remaining teeth and gum health

The dentist checks any remaining teeth for decay, looseness and gum support, and looks at the ridges where a denture will rest. X-rays may help assess bone levels. If some teeth need to be removed or treated first, the dentist will explain the order of care and how it affects the timeline. Healing after extractions can change the shape of the gums.

  • Your goals for chewing and appearance

Tell the dentist what matters most to you, whether that is chewing particular foods, speaking clearly or how your smile looks. If you already wear a denture, describe what you like and dislike about it. These priorities help guide the design and set realistic expectations for the finished result. Dentures improve many things but feel different from natural teeth.

Complete or partial

Each design works differently in the mouth.

When a complete denture is suggested

A complete denture rests on the gums and relies on suction, muscle control and fit for stability. Lower complete dentures can be more challenging to keep steady than upper ones. If retention is a concern, the dentist may discuss whether implant-supported options are worth exploring as an alternative or later addition. Upper dentures often feel steadier because of palate coverage.

How partial dentures attach

A partial denture usually has clasps or other attachments that hold onto nearby natural teeth. It can help prevent remaining teeth from drifting into gaps. Ask about the materials used for the framework and how clasps might affect the appearance and health of the teeth they grip. Some designs place clasps where they are less visible.

Making the denture

Several visits help refine fit and appearance.

  1. Impressions, bite records and try-ins

The process usually includes impressions, measurements of your bite and a try-in stage where you can see the tooth arrangement before the denture is finished. This is your chance to comment on shape, colour and how the teeth look when you smile. Ask how many appointments to expect so you can plan trips. Bringing someone whose opinion you trust can help at the try-in.

  2. Delivery and early adjustments

When the denture is delivered, the dentist checks fit and bite and explains how to insert and remove it. Sore spots are common in the first days and can often be relieved with small adjustments. It is helpful to book a follow-up visit rather than wait for discomfort to become difficult to manage. Wear the denture before that visit so sore spots are visible.

Living with dentures

Adjusting takes patience and practice.

Learning to eat and speak

Start with soft foods cut into small pieces and chew on both sides at once to keep the denture balanced. Reading aloud can help your speech adapt. Some people take a few weeks to feel at ease, and a little extra saliva or awkwardness early on is normal while your mouth gets used to the appliance.

Cleaning, storage and checkups

Remove and clean dentures daily with a denture brush and a suitable cleaner, and rinse after meals. Most people are advised to take dentures out overnight to rest the gums. Regular checkups allow the dentist to examine your tissues, check fit and recommend a reline when the gums change over time. Store dentures in water or solution so they do not dry out.

Planning your appointment

Planning denture visits from Cultus

Contact our Port Dover office to arrange a denture consultation. Let the team know whether you have teeth that may need removal and whether you currently wear an appliance, so enough time can be booked.

Bring your existing denture, if you have one, along with a list of medications and any notes from a previous dentist about your treatment.

Questions about dentures

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does it take to get used to new dentures?

Many people adapt over several weeks, though it varies. Eating, speaking and comfort usually improve with practice and minor adjustments. Contact the office if sore spots persist or the denture feels unstable rather than waiting it out.

Can a partial denture damage my other teeth?

Clasps place some force on supporting teeth, and plaque can build up around them. Good cleaning and regular checkups help protect those teeth. The dentist will design the partial to distribute forces as well as possible.

Should I sleep with my dentures in?

Most people are advised to remove them overnight to give the gums a rest and allow thorough cleaning. The dentist may give different advice in some situations, such as right after extractions when an immediate denture protects healing gums.

What if my denture becomes loose over time?

Gums and bone change shape over the years, which can make a denture feel loose. A reline or adjustment may restore the fit. Avoid home repair kits, which can distort the base, and contact the office instead.

Are implants an option instead of dentures?

In some cases, implants can support a denture or replace teeth individually. Suitability depends on bone, health and other factors. Ask the dentist to compare these options with conventional dentures during your consultation, including time and upkeep.
