Full arch or a few teeth

The right denture depends on which teeth remain and how they are doing.

A complete denture replaces all the teeth in an upper or lower arch, while a partial denture fills gaps between remaining natural teeth. Both can restore chewing and support the lips and cheeks. Choosing between them depends on the health of the teeth left, the gums and bone, and what you hope to achieve.

If you are coming from Bloomsburg, your consultation and fittings happen at our Port Dover office. The dentist examines your mouth, explains the options that suit your situation and outlines how many visits are likely before the denture is ready. That makes it easier to plan each trip into town.

Comparing options

Remaining teeth often guide the decision.

When a partial denture makes sense

If several healthy teeth remain, a partial denture can clip onto them to replace missing ones. It may be made with a metal framework or flexible material. The supporting teeth need to be strong and the gums healthy. The dentist may suggest treating decay or gum disease before the partial is designed so it rests on a stable foundation.

When a complete denture is considered

When few teeth remain or those left have a poor outlook, a complete denture may be discussed. Sometimes extractions are needed first, and the timing of the new denture can be planned around healing. The dentist can also talk about implant-retained options, which may offer more stability for some people but require additional assessment and planning.

Making dentures

Several appointments help build a comfortable fit.

  1. Impressions and bite records

The process begins with impressions of your mouth and records of how your jaws meet. Tooth shade and shape are chosen with your input. Bring a photograph of your smile from earlier years if you would like the dentist to consider it. Each step is explained so you know what will happen at the next visit.

  2. Try-in and adjustments

Many dentures are tried in before they are finished, allowing you to see the appearance and check the bite. Changes can be made at this stage. Once complete, the dentist checks fit and comfort. Expect follow-up visits to ease any pressure spots, which are common during the first weeks of wear. Note where any soreness is.

Getting used to them

Adapting takes practice and some patience.

Eating and speaking with dentures

Start with soft foods cut into small pieces and chew on both sides at once to keep the denture steady. Speaking may feel different at first; reading aloud can help. Your mouth needs time to adjust to the new appliance, and confidence usually grows with daily practice over the first few weeks. Be patient with yourself.

Sore spots and when to call

Some tenderness is normal early on, but persistent sore spots or ulcers should be checked rather than endured. Do not try to adjust a denture yourself. Call the office if the denture rocks, causes pain or affects your bite. Small adjustments can make a large difference to comfort. Wearing the denture for a few hours before the visit helps the dentist see where it presses.

Long-term care

Good care helps dentures last and protects your mouth.

  • Daily cleaning and overnight care

Clean dentures daily with a soft brush and a product meant for dentures, rinsing after meals when possible. Most people are advised to remove them overnight to give the gums a rest. Keep them moist when out of the mouth. If you have a partial, brush the natural teeth carefully, especially where clasps rest. Plaque gathers there easily.

  • Regular reviews of fit and tissue

Gums and bone change shape over time, so a denture that once fit well can loosen. Regular checkups allow the dentist to examine the soft tissues, check for signs of irritation and recommend a reline or repair when needed. Bring your dentures to every appointment so they can be inspected properly. Cracks are easier to fix early.

Denture planning questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Should I get a partial or a complete denture?

It depends on how many teeth remain and their health. The dentist will examine your mouth, explain the options that suit your situation, and discuss the benefits and limitations of each. Implant support may also be raised.

How long will it take to get dentures?

Several appointments are usually needed for impressions, bite records, try-ins and the final fitting. If extractions are needed, healing time is also considered. The dentist can outline a likely sequence so you can plan ahead.

Will my dentures look natural?

Tooth shape, size and shade are chosen with your input, and a try-in often lets you see the appearance before completion. Share any preferences so they can be considered. Bringing a family member’s opinion can help too.

Can I sleep with my dentures in?

Most people are advised to remove them overnight to rest the gums and help keep tissue healthy. The dentist will give guidance specific to your denture and situation. Store it moist overnight in a clean, covered container.

What if my denture feels loose later?

Changes in the gums and bone can affect fit over time. Book an assessment; a reline, adjustment or replacement may be discussed depending on the condition of the denture and tissues. Avoid home reline kits.
