Clear aligners are removable trays that move teeth gradually through a planned series of stages. They can address certain types of crowding, spacing and bite concerns without fixed brackets. Because you take them out to eat and clean, success depends heavily on wearing them for the recommended hours each day.
If you live in Windham Centre and are curious about aligners, a consultation at our Port Dover office is the place to start. The dentist will examine your teeth, gums and bite, explain whether aligners are suitable, and discuss how follow-up visits would fit around work, school and farm schedules.

Is it right for you
Teeth and gums need to be healthy before orthodontic movement begins. Active decay or gum disease is usually treated first. The dentist will check bone support, existing restorations and any missing teeth. X-rays and photographs help build a full picture of how your teeth sit and how they might be moved safely and as predictably as possible.
Aligners can handle many mild to moderate concerns, but complex bite problems, significant jaw discrepancies or certain tooth rotations may be better treated with braces or by an orthodontist. The dentist will be honest about what aligners can realistically achieve and whether referral might give you a better result. That conversation should happen before any trays are ordered.
Planning treatment
Impressions or digital scans of your teeth are used to plan each stage of movement. Many systems offer a preview of the expected result, which is a useful planning tool but not a guarantee. Ask the dentist how many trays are anticipated, how often you will change them and how often you will need check-in appointments.
Small tooth-coloured bumps called attachments may be bonded to some teeth to help the trays grip and move them. Minor reshaping between teeth is sometimes part of the plan. Partway through, refinement trays may be needed if teeth do not track exactly as predicted. Discuss these possibilities at the start so there are no surprises.
Daily wear
Aligners are typically worn most of the day and night, removed only to eat, drink anything other than water and clean your teeth. Leaving them out for long periods can slow progress or cause trays to stop fitting. Carry the case with you to work or school so trays are not wrapped in a napkin and accidentally thrown away.
Brush and floss before putting trays back in to avoid trapping food against teeth. Rinse trays and clean them gently as directed, avoiding hot water that can warp the plastic. Some tenderness is common when switching to a new tray. Call the office if a tray cracks, an attachment comes off or discomfort seems unusual.
Keeping the result
When active treatment ends, a retainer is needed to hold teeth in their new position. This may be a removable tray worn at night, a fixed wire behind the front teeth or both. The dentist will explain how long to wear it. Skipping retainer wear is one of the most common reasons teeth shift back after treatment.
Continue regular checkups and cleanings during and after aligner treatment. Bring your retainer to appointments so the fit can be checked. If it becomes loose, cracked or lost, contact the office promptly, since teeth can begin moving within a short time without it. Replacement retainers may be needed over the years, so ask what that involves.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to request an aligner consultation. Mention what you would like to change about your smile, any previous orthodontic treatment and how often you could attend check-ins.
Bring photos of your smile from different angles if you have them, along with any old retainers or records from past orthodontic care.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Most plans call for aligners to be worn for the majority of the day and night. Your dentist will give you a specific target. Consistent wear is essential, since time out of the mouth can slow or derail progress.
No. Remove them to eat and to drink anything other than plain water. Brush before putting them back in so food is not trapped against your teeth, which can increase the risk of decay and staining.
They can be for some teens, depending on dental development and the type of correction needed. Reliable wear is important. The dentist can assess whether aligners or another approach is likely to work better. Parents should expect to help with reminders.
Many people feel pressure or tenderness for a day or two after switching trays. This usually eases as teeth adjust. Sharp edges or persistent pain should be reported so the dentist can check the trays.
Yes. Retainers help prevent teeth from drifting back. The dentist will explain the type of retainer recommended and how often to wear it over the long term to protect your result. Retainer wear is usually ongoing.
