Clear aligners are a series of thin, removable plastic trays that move teeth in small steps. They can address many cases of crowding, spacing and some bite issues, and they are less noticeable than traditional braces. Results depend heavily on wearing the trays as directed for most of the day and keeping up with check-in appointments.
If you live in Walsingham and have been thinking about straightening your teeth, a consultation at our Port Dover office is the place to start. The dentist will assess your teeth, gums and bite and tell you honestly whether aligners are a suitable option or whether another approach would serve you better.

Is it a fit?
Mild to moderate crowding, gaps between teeth and teeth that have shifted after earlier orthodontic treatment are often well suited to aligners. Many adults and some teens use them successfully. The dentist will look at how your teeth meet and discuss what kind of movement is planned and how realistic the expected outcome is.
Complex bite problems, large jaw discrepancies or certain tooth rotations may respond better to braces or need an orthodontist’s involvement. Gum disease or untreated decay must be addressed first, because moving teeth in unhealthy gums can cause harm. If aligners are not appropriate, the dentist will explain why and suggest alternatives.
Planning
Planning typically involves photos, X-rays and an impression or digital scan of your teeth. From these, a series of aligners is designed to move teeth gradually. You may be shown a projected outcome, but it is a guide rather than a guarantee, and adjustments or additional trays are sometimes needed along the way.
Ask how long treatment is expected to take, how often you will need appointments and what the fees cover. Consider whether you can wear the trays for most of the day, including around work and meals. Small tooth-coloured attachments may be placed on some teeth to help the trays grip, and these are removed at the end.
Wearing aligners
Aligners generally need to be worn most of the day and night, coming out only to eat, drink anything other than water and clean your teeth. Each new set may feel snug for a day or two. Follow the schedule for changing trays exactly as instructed, and contact the office if a tray stops fitting properly or cracks.
Brush and floss before putting aligners back in, so food and plaque are not trapped against your teeth. Clean the trays gently as directed and keep them in their case when not in your mouth. Sugary or acidic drinks while wearing aligners can increase the risk of decay, so remove them or stick to plain water.
After treatment
Teeth tend to drift back toward their old position, especially in the first months after movement stops. Retainers, whether removable or bonded behind the teeth, help hold the result. The dentist will explain how often to wear them and for how long. Skipping retainer wear is one of the most common reasons teeth shift again.
Keep up with regular exams and cleanings, and bring your retainers to checkups so their fit can be confirmed. If a retainer breaks or feels tight after a few missed nights, call the office rather than forcing it. Small issues addressed early are generally easier to correct than relapse that has had months to develop.
Planning your appointment
Book a consultation at our Port Dover office and mention what bothers you about your teeth and whether you have had braces before. Ask how often check-in visits are typically needed so you can plan around them.
Bring any previous orthodontic records or retainers, and a list of questions about wear time, treatment length and what happens afterwards.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Most aligner systems require wear for the majority of the day and night, removing them only to eat, drink and clean your teeth. The dentist will give you specific instructions for your plan.
Many people feel pressure or tenderness for a day or two after switching to a new tray. This usually settles. Sharp edges or ongoing pain should be reported so the office can check the fit.
Some teens are good candidates, provided they can wear the trays consistently. The dentist considers growth, the type of correction needed and the teen’s commitment before recommending aligners or braces.
Yes. Retainers are needed to keep teeth from shifting after treatment. Your dentist will explain the type recommended and how long to wear it each night or day.
Some bite issues can be improved with aligners, while others need braces or specialist care. The dentist will assess your bite and explain what aligners can realistically achieve in your case.
