Clear aligners are a series of removable trays that shift teeth in small increments. They are popular because they are discreet and can be taken out to eat and brush. They are not suitable for every bite problem, though, and the results depend heavily on wearing them for the hours prescribed each day.
If you live in Vittoria and want to know whether aligners could work for you, an assessment at our Port Dover office will look at your teeth, gums and bite. The dentist will explain what aligners can reasonably achieve in your case, what alternatives exist and how often you would need to come in during treatment.

Is it a fit?
Aligners are often used for mild to moderate crowding, spacing and some bite issues in adults and teens whose adult teeth have come in. Your gums and teeth need to be healthy before tooth movement begins. The dentist will check for decay and gum disease and recommend addressing them first if they are present. Moving teeth on unhealthy gums is not advised.
Complex bite problems, significant jaw discrepancies or certain tooth positions may respond better to braces or may need an orthodontic specialist. If that is the case, the dentist should say so. Ask directly about the limits of aligners for your situation so you can make an informed comparison of options. A referral, if suggested, is about getting the right tool for the job.
Planning treatment
Records usually include photos, X-rays and a scan or impressions of your teeth. From these, a treatment plan maps how teeth are intended to move over a series of trays. Ask to see the projected changes and to understand how predictions can differ from real results, since teeth do not always move exactly as planned.
Small tooth-coloured bumps called attachments may be bonded to some teeth to help aligners grip. Minor reshaping between teeth is sometimes planned to create room. The dentist will explain why these steps are needed, if they are, and what happens to attachments once treatment is complete. They are usually polished off at the end. Ask how they may feel against your lips during the first few days.
Living with aligners
Aligners generally need to be worn most of the day and night, removed only for eating, drinking anything other than water and cleaning. Brush before putting them back in to avoid trapping food against teeth. Clean the trays as instructed. Leaving them out for long periods can slow progress or cause the next tray to fit poorly.
Periodic check-ins let the dentist confirm that teeth are tracking as planned. Missed check-ins or lost trays should be reported promptly. If a tray cracks, feels unusually tight for days or causes a sore spot, contact the office rather than skipping ahead or stopping wear without advice. Keep your previous tray as a backup in case a new one is lost or damaged.
Keeping results
After the final aligner, a retainer is used to help teeth stay in their new positions. The dentist will explain the type of retainer, how many hours to wear it at first and how that may change later. Retention is often needed long term, so think of it as part of the overall commitment. Ask about replacement costs early.
Bring your retainer to checkups so its fit can be confirmed. If it cracks, gets lost or starts feeling tight, contact the office soon, because teeth can move quickly without it. Ongoing checkups also keep an eye on gums and enamel around teeth that have been moved. Clean the retainer as carefully as you cleaned your trays.
Planning your appointment
Book an assessment at our Port Dover office and mention what you would like to change about your smile. Ask how many visits treatment would involve so you can judge how it fits your schedule.
Bring any previous orthodontic records and old retainers, and note questions about timing, wear and alternatives. A few recent smile photos can be useful too.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
It varies with the amount of movement needed and how consistently trays are worn. The dentist can give an estimated range after assessment, though actual timing can change if teeth do not track as planned.
Many people feel pressure or mild soreness for a day or two when starting a new tray. This usually settles. Sharp pain, cuts or persistent discomfort should be reported to the office. Dental wax can soften a rough edge in the meantime.
Aligners are usually removed for eating and for drinks other than plain water. Brush or rinse before putting them back. This helps protect teeth and keeps the trays clear and clean. Carry the case with you so trays are never wrapped in a napkin and thrown away.
This is common when retainers were not worn long term. Aligners may be an option for correcting relapse. The dentist will assess the current position and discuss suitable choices and retention afterward. Bring your old retainer if you still have it.
Long-term retention is commonly recommended because teeth can shift throughout life. The dentist will explain a wear schedule for your retainer and how to tell if it needs replacing. Many people move to night-only wear over time.
