Clear aligners are a series of removable trays that move teeth gradually toward a planned position. They are less visible than traditional braces and can be taken out to eat and clean, which appeals to many adults and teens. However, they rely heavily on consistent daily wear, and not every bite or crowding problem is well suited to them.
If you live in Villa Nova and are curious about aligners, an assessment at our Port Dover office is the place to start. The dentist can examine your teeth and gums and talk honestly about whether aligners are a reasonable option.

Is it a fit
Aligners are commonly used for mild to moderate crowding, spacing and some bite adjustments. More complex problems involving jaw relationships or significant rotation may need other approaches or a specialist opinion. Be clear about what bothers you most, whether it is one crooked tooth, gaps or how your teeth meet, so expectations can be discussed openly.
Teeth and gums need to be healthy before movement begins. Active decay, gum inflammation or unstable restorations are usually addressed first. The dentist will examine your mouth and may recommend X-rays or records to evaluate roots and bone support. This is also when previous orthodontic history should be mentioned.
Planning treatment
If aligners appear suitable, records such as photographs, impressions or scans are used to plan the movement. You may be shown how teeth are expected to shift over the course of treatment. Ask how many stages are planned, how often you would need check-in visits and what factors could lengthen the timeline.
Small tooth-coloured bumps called attachments are sometimes bonded to teeth to help the trays grip and guide movement. Additional trays, known as refinements, may be needed if teeth do not track exactly as planned. Ask about these possibilities early, so they are not a surprise partway through treatment.
Daily wear
Aligners generally need to be worn most of the day and night, coming out only for meals and cleaning. Leaving them out for long stretches can slow or derail progress. Think honestly about whether your work, school or social routines allow that level of wear before committing to this approach.
Brush your teeth before putting trays back in, so food is not trapped against tooth surfaces. Rinse and clean the aligners as instructed, and avoid drinking anything other than water while wearing them. New trays can feel tight for a day or two; this usually eases, but contact the office if discomfort persists.
Keeping results
Teeth tend to drift back toward their original positions, so a retainer is usually needed after active treatment. This might be removable, fixed behind the teeth, or both. Ask how long and how often to wear it, and what happens if it is lost or damaged, before your aligner treatment finishes.
Continue regular dental checkups and cleanings during and after treatment. Bring your retainer to appointments so the fit can be checked. If teeth start shifting or the retainer feels tight, call the office promptly; small changes are generally easier to manage than larger ones.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to request an assessment for clear aligners. Mention what you would like to change and any previous braces or retainers you have had.
Bring photos of your smile if you have noticed changes over time, and a list of questions about wear and check-in visits.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Aligners suit many mild to moderate cases, but complex bite or jaw problems may need braces or a specialist. The dentist will explain what is realistic after examining your teeth.
Aligners generally need to be worn for most of the day and night. Your dentist will give specific wear instructions, and consistent use is essential for teeth to move as planned.
Most people do. Teeth naturally tend to shift back without retention. The dentist will discuss the type of retainer and how long it should be worn.
Many people feel pressure or tightness when starting a new tray, which usually settles within a few days. Contact the office if you have sharp edges, sores or discomfort that does not ease.
Gum health generally needs to be stable before teeth are moved. The dentist will assess your gums and may recommend treatment first, then revisit aligners when appropriate.
Unsure what would change your smile most? A cosmetic consultation lets Villa Nova patients discuss goals, options and trade-offs with our Port Dover dentist.
A smile makeover combines treatments into one phased plan. Villa Nova patients can map out goals, sequence and upkeep with our dentist before deciding.
