Straightening, one tray at a time

Clear aligners work when the case suits them and the trays are worn.

Clear aligners are a series of thin plastic trays that move teeth gradually toward a planned position. They are removable for eating and brushing, which many adults and teens appreciate. Success depends on two things: whether your bite and tooth movements suit aligners, and whether you wear them for most of every day.

Patients from Vanessa can book a consultation at our Port Dover office to find out whether aligners are a reasonable option. Because treatment involves periodic check-ins over many months, it helps to think early about how those visits will fit with work, school and the drive into town.

Is it right for you

An honest assessment comes before any treatment plan.

What aligners handle well

Aligners often work well for mild to moderate crowding, spacing and some bite issues. The dentist examines your teeth, gums and jaw, and may take X-rays and scans to plan the movements. Healthy gums and treated decay are needed first, because moving teeth in an unhealthy mouth can lead to bone loss or other problems along the way.

When another approach may be better

Complex bite problems, significant rotations or jaw discrepancies may be better treated with braces or referred to an orthodontist. If the dentist thinks aligners would compromise the result, they should say so plainly and explain the alternatives. A clear, honest explanation at this stage is worth far more than a quick yes that leads to disappointment later.

Planning the movement

Your plan maps out how each tooth will move.

Scans and a digital preview

A digital scan of your teeth is used to plan the series of trays. You may see a preview of the expected movement, which is a helpful guide but not a guarantee of the final result. Ask how many trays are expected, how often you will switch to the next set and what the dentist will check at each review appointment.

Attachments and refinements

Small tooth-coloured bumps called attachments may be bonded to some teeth to help the trays grip and move them. Minor polishing between teeth is sometimes needed to create a little space. Additional refinement trays may be ordered near the end if some teeth have not fully tracked to the plan, which is a common part of treatment.

Living with aligners

Most of the work happens at home, every day.

  • Wear time and routine

Aligners are usually worn around twenty to twenty-two hours a day. Leaving them out for long stretches slows or derails progress. Expect some pressure for a day or two with each new tray. Keep your case with you during the workday so trays are never wrapped in a napkin and thrown away by accident at lunch.

  • Eating, drinking and cleaning

Remove trays to eat and to drink anything other than plain water. Brush your teeth before putting them back in, so food and sugar are not trapped against the enamel for hours. Rinse and gently brush the trays themselves, avoiding hot water that can warp the plastic. Good hygiene protects your teeth and gums throughout the whole course of treatment.

After treatment

Teeth tend to drift, so retention matters.

  1. Retainers

Once teeth reach their planned positions, a retainer is needed to hold them there. That may be a removable tray worn at night, a thin fixed wire behind the front teeth, or both. Without retention, teeth commonly move back toward where they started, so follow the dentist’s retainer instructions closely, especially in the first year.

  2. Follow-up checks

Bring your retainers to regular checkups so their fit can be checked. Replace them if they crack, warp or no longer seat well. If you notice teeth shifting or a retainer suddenly feeling tight, call the office rather than waiting for your next visit, since an early adjustment is far easier than correcting a full relapse.

Planning your appointment

Consulting about aligners from Vanessa

Book a consultation at our Port Dover office to have your teeth and bite examined. Ask whether aligners suit your goals, roughly how long treatment might take and how often check-in visits would be needed.

Bring a short list of what bothers you about your smile, along with any past orthodontic records or retainers you still have.

Clear aligner questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does aligner treatment take?

It varies with the amount of movement needed. Some cases take several months, while others run considerably longer. The dentist can give an estimate after the assessment, though the actual time depends on daily wear and how your teeth respond to each tray.

Do aligners hurt?

Most people feel pressure or mild soreness for a day or two with each new tray, and that usually settles on its own. Sharp pain or a tray edge rubbing on the gums should be reported so the tray can be checked and smoothed if needed.

Can I take them out for special occasions?

You can remove them for a short time, but the total daily wear time still needs to be met to keep treatment on track. Frequent long breaks reduce progress and may extend the overall length of treatment or require extra refinement trays.

Are aligners suitable for teens?

They can be, if the teen is willing to wear them consistently and the bite suits aligner treatment. The dentist will consider growth, dental development and how reliably the trays are likely to be worn before recommending them over braces.

Will I need a retainer forever?

Long-term retainer wear is usually recommended because teeth naturally tend to shift throughout life. The dentist will explain how often to wear it once treatment ends, and many people eventually settle into wearing it a few nights a week.
