Caring for Renton patients at our Port Dover office

Clear aligners are a series of thin, removable plastic trays, each shaped to nudge the teeth a little further toward a planned position. They are less visible than traditional braces and come out for eating and cleaning. That freedom also means results depend heavily on wearing them for the recommended hours every day.
People in Renton considering aligners can start with an assessment at our Port Dover office. The dentist will look at alignment, gum health and bite, explain whether aligners are a reasonable option or whether another approach may work better, and discuss how check-in visits would fit with life in the country.

Is it suitable?
The assessment looks at crowding, spacing, how the upper and lower teeth meet and the condition of gums and existing dental work. Decay and gum problems usually need attention before teeth are moved. Photographs, X-rays and scans may be used to plan. The dentist will explain what aligners could realistically achieve for your teeth and bite.
Some bite problems, significant rotations or jaw discrepancies may be better treated with traditional braces or referred to an orthodontist. The dentist will say so if that seems the case. It is worth asking what each option involves, how long it might take and what results to expect before deciding. A referral does not rule out a good result.
Planning treatment
If aligners are appropriate, records of your teeth are used to create a series of trays. You may be shown a preview of the planned movement. Ask how many stages are expected, how often you will change trays and how often you will need check-in visits at the office during treatment. Knowing this helps with planning.
Small tooth-coloured bumps called attachments are sometimes bonded to certain teeth to help the aligners grip and guide movement. Minor reshaping between teeth may also be part of the plan. Additional trays, known as refinements, are sometimes needed near the end. The dentist can explain why these steps may be recommended in your case. Attachments are usually removed afterward.
Living with aligners
Aligners generally need to be worn most of the day and night, coming out mainly to eat and clean your teeth. Leaving them out for long periods can slow progress or prevent the teeth from tracking properly. Keep the case with you so trays are not wrapped in a napkin and accidentally thrown away at a meal.
Remove the aligners to eat and to drink anything other than plain water. Brush and clean between your teeth before putting them back, so food and sugar are not trapped against the enamel. Rinse and gently clean the trays as instructed. Avoid hot water, which can distort the plastic. Keep trays away from pets as well.
Keeping the result
After the active stage ends, a retainer is usually needed to hold the teeth in their new positions. This may be removable, fixed behind the teeth or a combination. The dentist will explain how long and how often to wear it. Skipping retainer wear is a common reason results do not last as hoped. Make it part of your bedtime routine.
Bring retainers to your regular checkups so they can be checked for fit and wear. If a retainer cracks, gets lost or starts to feel tight, call the office rather than waiting. Small shifts can sometimes be addressed early, while larger relapse may require further treatment. Spare retainers can be worth asking about for peace of mind.
Planning your appointment
Call 519-583-2929 to request an assessment at our Port Dover office. Mention what you would like to change about your teeth and whether you have had braces or orthodontic treatment before.
Ask how often in-person check-ins would be needed so you can plan the trips from Renton over the course of treatment.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
It varies with the amount of movement needed and how consistently the trays are worn. Some cases are shorter, others take longer. The dentist can give an estimate after assessing your teeth, though timelines can change during treatment.
Many people feel pressure or mild soreness for a day or two when starting a new tray. This usually settles. Contact the office if a tray rubs your gums or cheek, or if soreness is severe or lasts longer than expected.
Occasional short breaks are generally possible, but frequent or long periods without the trays can slow progress. Ask the dentist how much flexibility your plan allows before removing them for extended times, such as a trip.
Usually, yes. Teeth have a natural tendency to move back. A retainer helps hold the new position. The dentist will explain the type and wear schedule suited to your result. Bring it to checkups so the fit can be reviewed.
No. Some bite problems or tooth movements are better treated with braces or by an orthodontist. Gum disease and decay also need to be addressed first. An assessment helps determine whether aligners are a reasonable choice for you.
