Caring for Port Ryerse patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Port RyerseStraighter teeth, step by step
Clear aligners are a series of removable trays that gradually shift teeth into new positions. They are nearly invisible and can be taken out for meals and brushing, which appeals to many adults and teens. However, they need to be worn most of the day, and not every bite problem is suited to this approach.
If you live in Port Ryerse, you can arrange an aligner consultation at our Port Dover office. The dentist will examine your teeth, gums and bite, discuss your goals and explain whether aligners, another orthodontic option or a referral would be more appropriate for you.

Are you a candidate
Aligners can address many cases of crowding, spacing and mild to moderate bite issues. More complex problems, such as significant jaw discrepancies, may respond better to other treatment or need a specialist. The dentist will look at how your upper and lower teeth meet, not just at the front of your smile.
Teeth should be free of active decay and gums should be healthy before movement begins. Existing crowns, bridges or implants can affect the plan, as implants do not move. Any dental problems are usually addressed first. Be honest about how consistently you think you can wear trays, as compliance drives results.
Planning treatment
Planning usually involves photographs, X-rays and impressions or digital scans of your teeth. These records are used to map out how teeth will move from one tray to the next. Ask to see or discuss the expected end result and any limitations, such as teeth that may not reach a perfect position.
Treatment length varies with the complexity of movement and how faithfully trays are worn. The dentist can give an estimated range but not a guarantee. Some cases need small tooth-coloured attachments bonded to teeth to help the trays grip, and minor refinement trays at the end are common.
Living with aligners
Aligners generally need to be worn for most of the day and night, coming out only to eat, drink anything other than water and clean your teeth. Brush before putting trays back in to avoid trapping food. Carry a case so trays are not wrapped in napkins and accidentally thrown away.
Periodic visits let the dentist check that teeth are tracking as planned. If you split your year between Port Ryerse and somewhere else, discuss scheduling these check-ins in advance. Report a lost or broken tray promptly rather than skipping ahead, as instructions differ depending on the situation.
Keeping the result
Once teeth reach their new positions, a retainer is needed to hold them there. This may be a removable tray worn at night, a fixed wire behind certain teeth or both. The dentist will explain how long and how often retainers should be worn, which may be indefinitely for some patients.
Bring retainers to regular checkups so they can be checked for fit and wear. Replace them if they crack or no longer seat properly. If you notice teeth shifting, contact the office early; small movements are easier to correct than larger relapses that develop over months.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book a consultation. Mention what you would like to change and whether you have had orthodontic treatment before.
If you are often away for part of the year, raise it early so check-in visits can be planned around your schedule.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Many people feel pressure or mild soreness for a day or two after switching to a new tray. This usually settles as teeth adjust. Sharp edges or persistent pain should be reported so the tray or attachments can be checked.
Generally only water is recommended while trays are in. Coffee, tea and sugary drinks can stain trays or trap sugars against teeth. Remove trays, drink, then rinse or brush before putting them back.
It varies widely with the amount of movement needed and how consistently trays are worn. The dentist can give an estimate after records are taken. Refinements at the end may extend treatment somewhat.
They can be, provided the teen is motivated to wear them consistently. Growth and erupting teeth may affect planning. The dentist will assess development and discuss whether aligners or another approach fits better.
Many patients are advised to wear retainers long term, often at night, because teeth can move throughout life. The dentist will recommend a retention plan based on your treatment and how your teeth respond.
