Clear aligners are a series of removable, transparent trays that gradually move teeth into new positions. They can be a discreet option for some adults and teens with crowding, spacing or certain bite concerns. Whether they suit you depends on the movement needed, the health of your teeth and gums and how reliably you can wear them.
For Peacock Point residents, an aligner consultation takes place at our Port Dover office. If you spend only part of the year at the lake, mention it early, because treatment involves periodic check-ins and the schedule needs to work with where you will be.

Consultation
Some people want to close a small gap, others want crowded teeth to line up or a bite to feel more even. Bring photos of your smile from earlier years if your teeth have shifted. Clear goals help the dentist explain whether aligners are likely to achieve them or whether a different orthodontic approach should be considered instead.
Teeth and gums need to be healthy before movement begins. Untreated cavities, gum inflammation or loose teeth may need attention first. The dentist will examine your mouth and may recommend X-rays and scans. If your case appears complex, a referral to an orthodontist for an opinion may be suggested as part of responsible planning.
Treatment plan
Digital scans can be used to plan a sequence of aligners and show a projected result. Treat this as an estimate rather than a promise, since teeth do not always move exactly as planned. Ask how many trays are expected, how often you will change them and how long treatment is likely to take for your situation.
Small tooth-coloured bumps called attachments are sometimes bonded to teeth to help aligners grip. Additional trays, known as refinements, may be needed if teeth lag behind. Ask whether these are likely, how they would be handled and what the plan is for keeping teeth in place with retainers after active treatment is finished.
Wearing aligners
Aligners work only while they are in your mouth, so they are typically worn most of the day and night. Remove them for eating and drinking anything but plain water. Summer days at the beach, social events and travel can make it easy to forget them, so set reminders and always carry the case.
Brush your teeth before putting aligners back in to avoid trapping food against the enamel. Clean the trays gently as instructed and avoid hot water, which can distort them. Expect pressure or mild soreness when switching to a new set. Contact the office if a tray cracks, an attachment comes off or pain persists.
Keeping results
Teeth tend to drift back toward their old positions after movement, especially in the first months. A retainer, removable or fixed, is usually recommended. Follow the instructions about how many hours a day to wear it. Skipping retainer wear is one of the most common reasons results change, so treat it as part of the treatment.
Bring retainers to checkups so fit and condition can be assessed. Replace a lost or broken retainer promptly, as teeth can shift quickly without one. If you notice changes in your bite or spacing, contact the office. Ongoing regular hygiene and examinations remain important throughout and after orthodontic care.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book a consultation. Explain what you would like to change about your smile and let the team know your usual seasonal schedule, since aligner treatment involves regular check-ins.
Bring older photos of your smile if your teeth have shifted, and any orthodontic records from past treatment.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Aligners can address some crowding, spacing and bite concerns, but certain movements may be better treated with other orthodontic methods. Healthy teeth and gums and consistent wear are also required. A consultation helps determine suitability.
Aligners are usually worn most of the day and night, removed only to eat, drink anything other than water and clean your teeth. The dentist will give specific instructions, and treatment may take longer if wear time is reduced.
Many people feel pressure or mild soreness for a day or two after starting a new tray. This usually settles. Contact the office if discomfort is severe, a tray has a sharp edge or you notice a problem with a tooth.
Call the office for guidance. Depending on timing, you may be asked to wear the previous or next tray while a replacement is arranged. Do not simply stop wearing aligners, as teeth may move out of position.
Retainers are usually recommended to help hold teeth in their new positions. Without one, teeth can drift back. The dentist will explain the type of retainer suggested and how often it should be worn over time.
