Clear aligners are a series of removable trays that gradually move teeth toward a planned position. They can address certain crowding, spacing and bite concerns, but they are not right for every situation. Success depends heavily on wearing the trays most of the day and following the plan consistently over many months.
If you live in Nixon and are curious about aligners, start with a consultation at our Port Dover office. The dentist will examine your teeth and gums, discuss your goals and explain whether aligners are a reasonable option or whether another approach may serve you better.

Is it a good fit
Before moving teeth, any decay or gum disease should be addressed. Healthy gums and bone support are needed for safe tooth movement. The dentist will examine your mouth, may take X-rays and will ask about previous orthodontic treatment, since teeth that have shifted after braces sometimes behave differently. Treating any problems first keeps the movement phase safer and more predictable.
Mild to moderate crowding or spacing often responds well to aligners. More complex bite or jaw issues may require traditional braces or a referral to an orthodontist. Be open about what bothers you most, whether it is one crooked tooth or the overall bite, so the recommendation reflects your real priorities rather than an ideal you never asked for.
Planning the movement
Impressions or scans, photos and X-rays help create a plan for how each tooth should move. Some plans include small tooth-coloured attachments bonded to certain teeth to help the trays grip. Ask to see a preview of the planned changes and discuss whether the end result matches what you are hoping for. Asking questions at this stage costs nothing in progress.
Treatment length varies widely depending on the movement required. The dentist can give an estimate, but it may change if trays are not worn as directed or teeth respond differently than expected. Refinement trays at the end are fairly common. Clarify what follow-up visits will involve, and how often you would need to come in, before committing.
Living with aligners
Aligners generally need to be worn most of the day and night, removed only to eat, drink anything other than water and clean your teeth. Leaving them out for long stretches can slow progress or cause trays to stop fitting. Keep the case with you so trays are not wrapped in a napkin and lost.
Brush your teeth before putting trays back in to avoid trapping food against the enamel. Clean the trays gently as instructed and avoid hot water, which can distort them. Sipping sugary or acidic drinks with trays in place is best avoided, as the liquid can pool around the teeth. Plain water is the safe choice while wearing them.
Keeping the result
Once movement is complete, retainers help hold teeth in their new position. Teeth can shift throughout life, so retainer wear is often long term. Your dentist will explain the recommended schedule, how to care for the retainer and what to do if it becomes lost or damaged. Skipping retainer wear is one of the most common reasons teeth relapse.
Keep up with routine cleanings and checkups during and after treatment. Report sore spots, a broken tray or a tooth that feels unusually loose. Regular reviews let the dentist check that teeth are moving as planned and that gums stay healthy throughout the process. Clean teeth also help the trays stay clear, fresh and comfortable.

They are designed to be discreet, though attachments and the trays themselves may be visible up close. Most people find them less noticeable than traditional braces. The dentist can show you examples of how they look when worn.
Many people feel pressure or tenderness for a day or two when starting a new tray. This usually settles as teeth adjust. Persistent pain, sharp edges or sores should be reported to the office for advice.
It is generally advised to remove trays for anything other than water. Coffee and tea can stain trays, and sugary drinks can sit against your teeth. Rinse or brush before putting the trays back in.
Contact the office for guidance. Depending on timing, you may be asked to move to the next tray, return to the previous one or wait for a replacement. Do not guess, as this can affect progress.
Some teens do well with aligners if they are motivated to wear them consistently. The dentist will consider growth, the type of movement needed and the teen’s commitment when recommending an approach. Parents are welcome to join that discussion.
