Clear aligners are a series of removable plastic trays that move teeth gradually. They can address many cases of crowding, spacing and some bite concerns, and they are less noticeable than traditional braces. They are not right for every situation, and results depend heavily on the patient wearing the trays for the hours prescribed.
Langton patients interested in aligners can start with a consultation at our Port Dover office. The dentist will examine your teeth and gums, discuss your goals and explain honestly whether aligners are a reasonable option or whether another approach, or a referral to an orthodontist, may serve you better.

Is it a fit?
Mild to moderate crowding, gaps between teeth and teeth that have shifted after earlier braces are often good candidates. Teeth and gums need to be healthy before movement begins, so cavities or gum disease may need treatment first. The dentist also checks for missing teeth, older crowns and bridges, bone levels and any jaw joint symptoms.
Complex bite problems, severe rotations, significant jaw discrepancies or large tooth movements may be better managed with fixed braces or specialist care. If the dentist feels another approach would give a more predictable result, they will explain why and can discuss a referral to an orthodontist, so you can compare the options and their timelines before committing.
Planning
Records usually include photographs, X-rays and a scan or impressions of your teeth. A digital plan shows how the teeth are expected to move in stages. Small tooth-coloured attachments may be bonded to some teeth to help the trays grip, and gentle polishing between teeth is sometimes needed to create a little extra room. The dentist will explain each of these steps first.
Ask how long treatment is expected to take, how often you will need check-in visits and what happens if teeth do not track as planned. Refinement trays are sometimes needed near the end. Knowing this in advance helps you plan the trips into Port Dover around work, harvest season, school and other commitments without missing important check-ins.
Wearing the trays
Aligners generally need to be worn most of the day and night, coming out only for meals and cleaning. Leaving them out for long stretches can slow progress or stop teeth from tracking with the plan. Switch to each new tray on the schedule given, and keep the previous set in case a tray is lost or damaged.
Remove the trays to eat or drink anything other than plain water. Brush your teeth before putting aligners back in so food is not trapped against the enamel. Rinse and gently brush the trays, and avoid hot water, which can warp them. Keep them in their case whenever they are out, since wrapped in a napkin they are easily thrown away.
Keeping the result
Once teeth reach their planned position, they can gradually shift back if they are not held in place. A retainer, either removable or bonded behind the teeth, is part of the treatment rather than an optional extra. Ask about the type recommended, how many hours it should be worn and how long the retention phase is expected to continue.
Bring retainers to regular checkups so their fit can be assessed. Replace them if they crack, warp or stop seating fully. Report any tooth that seems to be moving again before the change becomes larger. Ongoing exams and cleanings remain important, as healthy gums and bone support the long-term stability of the new alignment for years to come.

Before you book

Most aligner systems call for the trays to be worn the majority of the day and overnight. Your dentist will give a specific target. Wearing them less than recommended is one of the most common reasons treatment takes longer than planned.
Many people feel pressure or mild soreness for a day or two after switching to a new tray. This usually settles as the teeth adjust. Sharp edges can be smoothed at the office. Report persistent pain or a tray that will not seat properly.
It is best to remove trays for anything other than plain water. Hot drinks can warp the plastic, and coloured or sugary drinks can stain the trays and sit against the teeth, increasing the risk of cavities.
Yes. Retainers help prevent teeth from drifting back toward their original positions. The dentist will recommend a type and wear schedule, which often continues long term, especially at night, to protect the result you worked for.
Neither is better in every case. Aligners are discreet and removable but rely on consistent wear and suit certain movements. Braces can handle a wider range of problems. The dentist will help you weigh the options for your teeth.
