Clear aligners are a series of removable, transparent trays that gradually move teeth into new positions. They appeal to adults and teens who want to avoid fixed braces, but they are not suitable for every bite. Success also depends heavily on wearing them for most of the day, every day, throughout treatment.
Jarvis residents curious about aligners can arrange an assessment at our Port Dover office. The dentist will look at your teeth, gums and bite and talk honestly about whether aligners make sense for your goals.

Is it right for me
Mild to moderate crowding, spacing and some bite issues can often be addressed with aligners. The dentist will ask what bothers you about your smile and whether you have had orthodontic treatment before. Your expectations are part of the discussion, since some changes are achievable while others may need a different plan.
Complex bite problems, significant jaw discrepancies or certain tooth movements may be better handled with traditional braces or a referral to an orthodontist. Active gum disease or untreated decay usually needs attention first. The dentist will explain the reasons if aligners are not the recommended starting point.
Planning treatment
Records typically include photos, X-rays and impressions or a scan of your teeth. These are used to plan the sequence of movements and estimate how many sets of aligners will be needed. Small tooth-coloured attachments may be bonded to some teeth to help the trays grip and guide movement effectively.
Aligners generally need to be worn most of the day and night, removed only for eating, drinking anything other than water and cleaning. Ask how long treatment is expected to take, how often check-ins are needed and what happens if progress falls behind. Clarity about the commitment helps you decide confidently.
Day to day
Wear each set for the recommended period and switch on schedule. Brush your teeth before putting aligners back in to avoid trapping food against the teeth. Rinse and gently clean the trays as instructed, and always store them in their case rather than wrapping them in a napkin, where they are easily lost.
Remove aligners for meals and drinks other than plain water. New trays may feel snug or cause pressure for a day or two, which usually eases. Speech may feel different at first. If a tray cracks, an attachment comes off or discomfort persists, contact the office for advice.
Keeping results
Teeth naturally tend to drift after they are moved, so retainers are an important part of treatment. The dentist will explain the type of retainer and how often it should be worn. Many people need to wear retainers long term, often at night, to keep their teeth in their new positions.
Continue regular checkups and cleanings during and after treatment. Bring your retainer so the fit can be checked. If it becomes loose, damaged or uncomfortable, call the office rather than stopping use, since even a short gap can allow teeth to shift.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book an aligner consultation. Mention what you would like to change about your smile and whether you have had braces or aligners before.
Bring photos of your smile from earlier years if alignment has changed over time, along with any previous orthodontic records.

For suitable cases they can achieve good results, but not every bite is a good match. The dentist will assess your teeth and explain whether aligners, braces or another approach is likely to work best.
Most plans call for wearing them the majority of the day and night, removing them only to eat, drink and clean. Consistent wear is essential for teeth to move as planned.
Many people feel pressure or tenderness for a day or two after switching to a new set. This usually settles. Persistent pain, a sharp edge or a cracked tray should be reported to the office.
Sometimes, depending on their teeth, growth and willingness to wear the trays consistently. A parent and teen can attend the consultation together to discuss expectations and responsibilities.
They can if retainers are not worn as directed. Retainer use is an important part of keeping results. The dentist will explain how long and how often to wear them.
