Clear aligners are a series of thin, removable plastic trays that gradually move teeth into new positions. Many people like that they are discreet and can be taken out to eat and brush. However, they are not suitable for every bite, and results depend heavily on wearing the trays for the recommended number of hours each day.
If you are in Hillcrest and curious about aligners, our Port Dover office can assess your teeth and bite. The dentist will explain whether aligners are a reasonable option, what alternatives exist and what the treatment would ask of you each day. A referral for specialist orthodontic care may be suggested if your bite needs it.

Is it suitable?
Start by describing what bothers you, whether that is crowding, gaps, crooked front teeth or a bite that feels uneven. Photos of your smile from different angles can help explain your goals. The dentist will consider whether these concerns can be addressed with aligners or whether braces, specialist orthodontic care or another approach would be more effective.
Teeth should be free of active decay and gums should be healthy before orthodontic movement begins. The dentist may recommend X-rays to look at roots and bone levels. Existing crowns, bridges or implants can affect what is possible, since implants do not move. Any treatment needed beforehand will be discussed as part of planning at the outset.
Planning treatment
If aligners are suitable, records such as impressions or digital scans, photos and X-rays are used to plan the tooth movements. Some plans involve small tooth-coloured attachments bonded to certain teeth, which help the trays grip and guide movement. Ask the dentist to explain how many stages are expected and how progress will be monitored.
Predicted results are estimates, and teeth do not always move exactly as planned. Refinement trays may be needed. Ask about the expected length of treatment, the possibility of additional steps and what happens if you are unable to wear the trays consistently. A realistic understanding helps avoid disappointment later and lets you decide whether the commitment suits your routine.
Wearing the trays
Aligners generally need to be worn for most of the day and night, removed only for eating, drinking anything other than water and cleaning. Each new tray may feel snug for a day or two. Keep the current and previous trays in case one is lost. Set reminders if needed, because frequent forgotten hours can slow progress.
Brush your teeth before putting trays back in to avoid trapping food and sugars against the enamel. Clean the trays as directed, using cool water rather than hot. Avoid chewing gum while wearing them. Tell the dentist if a tray cracks, an attachment comes off or a tooth becomes unusually painful between your scheduled visits.
Keeping the result
Once active treatment ends, a retainer is usually needed to hold teeth in their new positions. This may be a removable retainer worn at night or a fixed wire bonded behind certain teeth. Ask how long retainers should be worn, how to clean them and what to do if one becomes lost or damaged later on.
Regular dental checkups continue to be important. The dentist can check retainers, look for any shifting and monitor gum health. If you notice teeth moving, contact the office early, since minor changes may be easier to address before they become more noticeable. Bringing your retainer to checkups also lets the dentist confirm it still fits properly and is not cracked or worn.
Planning your appointment
Book a consultation at our Port Dover office and mention that you are interested in clear aligners. The dentist will assess your teeth and explain whether this approach suits your goals and bite.
Bring any previous orthodontic records or retainers and note how much daily wear time you could realistically commit to over the months ahead.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
For some cases they can be similarly effective, while complex bite problems may respond better to braces or specialist orthodontic treatment. The dentist will explain which approach suits your situation after assessing your teeth and records.
Many people feel pressure or mild soreness when switching to a new tray. This usually eases within a few days. Report sharp pain, sores or a tooth that remains very sore, as the dentist may want to check the fit.
Some teenagers are suitable candidates, depending on tooth development and how reliably they will wear the trays. The dentist can discuss whether aligners are appropriate or whether another orthodontic option would be more effective for them.
Many people are advised to wear a retainer long term, at least at night, because teeth can shift throughout life. The dentist will recommend a retention plan and explain how to care for the retainer.
Contact the office for advice. You may be told to move to the next tray or return to the previous one temporarily. Keeping older trays in their case makes this easier to manage if it happens.
