Straighter teeth, one tray at a time

Clear aligners work best when you understand the commitment involved.

Clear aligners are removable plastic trays that move teeth gradually through a planned sequence. They appeal to many adults and teens because they are less noticeable than traditional braces. Results, however, depend on the type of tooth movement needed and on wearing the trays for most of the day.

If you live in Cultus and are curious about aligners, a consultation at our Port Dover office is the place to start. We will examine your teeth and gums, discuss what you would like to change and talk honestly about whether aligners are suitable or whether another approach may serve you better.

Is it a good fit?

Not every bite problem is suited to aligners.

The kinds of movement aligners handle

Aligners are often used for crowding, spacing and some bite concerns. More complex problems involving jaw position or significant rotations may need other orthodontic treatment or a specialist referral. The dentist will explain what aligners can realistically achieve for your teeth and where their limits lie, so you can make an informed choice. Honest expectations at the start prevent disappointment later.

Health checks before starting

Teeth and gums should be healthy before orthodontic movement begins. Any active decay or gum inflammation is usually treated first. The dentist may also take X-rays and photographs to assess roots, bone levels and the overall bite. These records help build a treatment plan suited to your mouth. Moving teeth through inflamed gums can make existing problems worse.

Planning treatment

A plan maps out how your teeth will move.

Scans, records and a digital preview

Digital scans or impressions are used to design a sequence of trays. Some systems provide a preview of the planned movement, which can be helpful for discussion, but it is a guide rather than a guarantee. Ask what the preview shows, what might differ in reality and whether refinements are commonly needed. Extra trays near the end are not unusual.

Timelines and expectations

The length of treatment varies with complexity and how consistently trays are worn. Small attachments bonded to some teeth may help the aligners grip and guide movement. Ask the dentist how many check-in visits to expect, since planning those trips from home is part of deciding whether aligners fit your schedule. Attachments are tooth-coloured and removed once treatment ends.

Daily life with trays

Consistency is what makes aligners effective.

  • Wearing time and eating

Most aligner plans require wearing trays for the majority of each day, removing them only to eat, drink anything other than water and clean your teeth. Leaving trays out for long periods can slow progress or cause them to stop fitting. Keep a case with you so trays are not wrapped in a napkin and lost.

  • Cleaning trays and teeth

Brush your teeth before putting trays back in, since trapped food and sugary drinks can raise the risk of decay. Rinse and gently clean the trays each day as directed. Mild pressure is common when switching to a new set, and it usually eases over a few days. Many people change trays at bedtime so the first hours pass in sleep.

After treatment

Teeth can shift back without a retainer.

  1. Retainers and why they matter

Once the active phase ends, the dentist will recommend a retainer to hold teeth in their new positions. Teeth naturally tend to move over time, and retainers help prevent that relapse. Ask how often to wear the retainer, how long it is expected to last and what to do if it cracks or no longer fits.

  2. Long-term checkups

Continue regular checkups and cleanings during and after aligner treatment. Bring your retainer to appointments so the fit can be checked. If you notice teeth shifting or the retainer becoming tight, contact the office promptly, as early adjustment is often simpler than correcting a larger change later. A spare retainer can be useful if one is lost or damaged.

Planning your appointment

Starting the conversation from Cultus

Call our Port Dover office to book an aligner consultation. Mention what bothers you about your smile and whether you have had braces before, so the team can plan the assessment.

Ask how often check-in visits are typically scheduled. Knowing this early helps you decide whether the plan fits comfortably with work, school and travel from home.

Clear aligner questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Am I too old for clear aligners?

Adults of many ages use aligners. Suitability depends more on the health of your teeth, gums and supporting bone than on age. The dentist will assess these during your consultation and explain the options, including any treatment needed first.

Do aligners hurt?

Many people feel pressure or mild soreness for a few days after switching to a new tray. This usually settles as teeth adjust. Contact the office if you have sharp pain or a tray rubs against your gums.

Can I eat with aligners in?

Trays are generally removed for eating and drinking anything except water. Eating with them in can damage the trays and trap food against your teeth. Brush, or at least rinse well, before putting them back in.

What if I had braces as a teenager and my teeth moved?

This is common, particularly if a retainer was not worn long term. Aligners may be an option for correcting relapse. The dentist will examine your current alignment and discuss what is realistic, including how to prevent the same relapse.

Will I need a retainer afterward?

Yes, a retainer is usually recommended to maintain the result. Teeth tend to shift over time, and retainers help keep them in place. The dentist will explain how and when to wear yours, and how to care for it.
