Straightening with removable trays

Aligners work best when the case and the commitment both fit.

Clear aligners are a series of thin, removable trays that move teeth gradually over time. They are less noticeable than traditional braces and can be taken out to eat and brush. They are not right for every bite, though, and their results depend heavily on wearing them as directed for most of the day.

If you live in Boston and are curious about aligners, start with a consultation at our Port Dover office. The dentist can examine your teeth and bite, discuss what you hope to change and explain whether aligners, another approach or a referral makes the most sense.

Is it suitable

Aligners suit many mild to moderate cases, not all of them.

Concerns aligners often address

Crowding, small gaps, slightly rotated teeth and some bite issues can often be treated with aligners. Adults who had braces as teens and have noticed teeth shifting since are common candidates. The dentist will check gum health and existing dental work first, since those need to be stable and healthy before any teeth are moved.

When another approach may be better

More complex bite problems, significant jaw discrepancies or teeth that need large movements may respond better to other orthodontic methods. In those situations, referral to an orthodontist may be discussed. An honest assessment at the start helps you avoid investing months of time in a treatment that is unlikely to achieve the goals you have in mind.

Planning

Good planning lets you see the path before committing.

Records and digital planning

Records usually include photographs, a scan or impressions and x-rays where needed. These are used to plan a sequence of small tooth movements. You may be shown a projection of how teeth are expected to shift over the course of treatment. Treat it as a guide rather than a promise, since real teeth do not always follow a simulation exactly.

Understanding the expected result

Ask how long treatment is likely to take, how often you will need check-in visits and whether small tooth-coloured attachments or slight reshaping between teeth are part of the plan. Discuss what happens if teeth do not track as expected. Knowing these details upfront makes it easier to decide whether the commitment fits your life and schedule.

Wearing aligners

Consistency during the day and night drives the result.

  • How many hours count

Aligners generally need to be worn for most of every day, taken out only for meals and cleaning. Leaving them out for long stretches can slow progress or cause later trays to stop fitting. Some people feel early pressure or notice a slight lisp in the first days of each new set, which usually eases as the mouth adjusts.

  • Eating, drinking and cleaning

Remove aligners to eat and to drink anything other than plain water. Brush and floss before putting them back in, so food is not trapped against your teeth for hours. Clean the trays gently with cool water and a soft brush. Hot water can warp them, so keep them away from heat, including car dashboards in summer.

After treatment

Teeth tend to drift unless the result is held in place.

  1. Retainers and why they matter

Once teeth reach their planned positions, a retainer is typically needed to keep them there, because teeth have a natural tendency to move back. Ask how often the retainer should be worn, how long it is expected to last and how to recognise when it is no longer fitting properly and should be checked or replaced.

  2. Ongoing dental care

Continue regular checkups and cleanings during and after treatment. Straighter teeth can be easier to clean, but they still need daily brushing and flossing. If you notice shifting, a retainer that suddenly feels tight or damage to a tray, contact the office rather than waiting for the next scheduled visit to raise the concern with the team.

Planning your appointment

Starting the conversation from Boston

Call our Port Dover office to book a clear aligner consultation. Let the team know what you would like to change about your smile and whether you have had any orthodontic treatment in the past.

If you have an old retainer or records from past orthodontic care, bring them along for the dentist to review at the consultation.

Clear aligner questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Are clear aligners right for everyone?

No. They work well for many mild to moderate alignment concerns, but some bite problems need other approaches. The dentist will examine your teeth and explain whether aligners are suitable for you or whether a referral would serve you better.

How long will treatment take?

Treatment length varies with the amount of movement needed and how consistently the aligners are worn. The dentist can give an estimate after planning, but timelines can change depending on how your teeth actually respond along the way.

Do aligners hurt?

Many people feel pressure or tenderness for a day or two when switching to a new set. This is usually manageable and fades as the teeth adjust. Persistent pain, sore gums or sharp edges on a tray should be reported to the office.

Can I drink coffee with aligners in?

It is generally best to remove aligners for anything other than plain water. Hot drinks may warp them, and coloured or sugary drinks can stain trays or sit against your teeth for long periods, raising the risk of decay.

Will I need a retainer afterward?

Most people do. Teeth naturally tend to shift after being moved, and a retainer helps hold the new positions. The dentist will explain how often to wear it, how to care for it and when it might need replacing.
