A gentle introduction

The first visit is mostly about meeting, looking and learning.

A first dental appointment sets the tone for years of visits. For most young children it is short and relaxed: a chance to sit in the chair, meet the team and let the dentist take a look. Parents also gain practical advice about teething, brushing, bottles, snacks and what to watch for as teeth arrive.

Families from Vittoria are welcome to bring young children to our Port Dover office for this introduction. If you are unsure when to start, call and ask. The team can suggest timing based on your child’s age and teeth, and talk about any early concerns you have already noticed.

When to book

Starting before problems appear gives children a calmer first experience.

Early is usually easier

Many dental organizations suggest a first visit around the time the first tooth appears or by the first birthday. Booking early means the first experience is a simple look rather than treatment for a sore tooth. It also gives parents guidance while habits are still forming, which is often when advice is most useful. It is never too late to start.

Reasons to come sooner

Come in sooner if you notice white or brown spots on teeth, swollen gums, a chipped tooth after a fall or anything that looks unusual. Mention concerns about feeding, prolonged bottle use at night or thumb sucking. The team can tell you whether something needs prompt attention or simply monitoring. A photo of the area taken at home can help you describe it.

Preparing at home

Simple, upbeat preparation goes a long way with toddlers and preschoolers.

  • Make it familiar

Read a picture book about visiting the dentist, play at counting teeth with a stuffed animal or let your child brush a doll’s teeth. Keep the language calm and positive. Avoid promising that nothing will happen or sharing your own anxieties, since children often take cues from how adults describe the experience. Keep it light and brief.

  • Plan the day sensibly

Choose an appointment time when your child is usually rested and fed, avoiding nap times where possible. Bring a comfort item if it helps. Allow a little extra time for the trip so nobody arrives rushed. A calm parent tends to make for a calmer child once you are inside. A small snack for the drive home can help too.

During the visit

The team follows your child’s lead as much as possible.

  1. Lap exams and gentle looks

Very young children may be examined while sitting on a parent’s lap, facing the dentist. The dentist counts teeth, checks gums and looks for early signs of decay or developmental issues. A gentle cleaning or fluoride may be offered if appropriate. If your child becomes upset, the team can slow down or simply finish another day.

  2. Advice for parents

You will receive practical guidance on brushing technique, toothpaste amounts, cleaning between teeth as they touch, and drinks and snacks. Ask about teething discomfort, pacifiers and thumb sucking. The dentist will also explain when the next visit should be and what it may include as your child grows. Write down anything you want to remember, since it is easy to forget details while watching a toddler.

After the visit

Positive follow-through helps the next appointment go even better.

Praise the effort

Talk about the visit afterward in a cheerful way and praise your child for what they managed, whether that was opening wide or simply sitting in the chair. Avoid focusing on anything that went less well. Small steps matter, and a child who feels proud is more likely to return willingly. Telling a family member about the visit can add to the sense of achievement.

Keep visits regular

Regular checkups help children become familiar with the setting and the people. Booking the next appointment before you leave can make the routine easier to keep. If concerns arise between visits, such as a fall, a dark spot or pain, contact the office rather than waiting for the next scheduled exam. The team would rather hear early than late.

Planning your appointment

A first visit from Vittoria

When calling our Port Dover office, let the team know this is your child’s first dental visit and share their age. Ask about appointment times that suit naps or school, and how long the visit usually lasts.

Bring health information, any medications and a short list of questions so you do not forget them once your child needs your attention.

First dental visit questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

At what age should my child first see a dentist?

A common recommendation is around the time the first tooth appears or by the first birthday. If you are past that point, it is still worth booking. Call the office and the team can advise on timing for your child.

What if my child cries during the visit?

That is completely normal for young children. The team is used to it and will go at a pace your child can manage. Even a short visit helps build familiarity, and later visits are often easier.

Will my child have X-rays at the first appointment?

Not usually for very young children unless there is a specific concern. The dentist will explain if imaging is needed and why. Most first visits focus on a visual exam and advice for parents. Imaging tends to come later.

Can siblings come along?

Ask the office when booking. Sometimes watching an older sibling’s checkup helps a younger child feel relaxed. If several children need visits, the team can talk about scheduling them together. Bringing another adult can help if you are managing more than one child.

How should I clean my baby’s teeth?

Use a soft infant brush and a small smear of fluoride toothpaste as recommended for your child’s age. Brush twice daily. The dentist can demonstrate technique and adjust advice as more teeth come in. Lifting the lip helps you see the gumline.
