A gentle introduction

The first visit is about getting comfortable as much as checking teeth.

Many dental organizations suggest a first visit around the time the first tooth appears or by the first birthday. That early appointment is short and relaxed. It lets the dentist see how teeth are developing, answer questions about feeding and brushing, and give a young child a calm first impression of a dental office.

If your family lives in Vanessa or the farm country nearby, our Port Dover office is happy to welcome your little one. Telling the team about your child’s temperament and any worries ahead of time helps them shape a first visit that feels friendly rather than overwhelming.

When to book

Earlier visits are usually easier than later ones.

The first tooth or first birthday

Booking a first appointment early means it is usually a simple, friendly look rather than a visit prompted by pain or a fall. If your child is older and has never been seen, it is still well worth booking now. The dentist can start with a gentle look at whatever age they are and build familiarity from there over the following visits.

Choosing a good time of day

Pick a time when your child is normally fed and rested. For many toddlers that is the morning, after breakfast and before a nap is due. Allow plenty of time for the drive so you are not arriving rushed or flustered, since young children pick up quickly on a hurried or anxious mood from the adults around them.

Preparing at home

Keep the lead-up light and matter-of-fact.

  • Simple, positive talk

Use simple words: the dentist will count your teeth and see how strong they are. Avoid promises such as it will not hurt, which can plant the idea that it might. Try not to share your own dental worries in front of your child. Reading a picture book about a first dental visit a few days ahead can make the idea feel familiar.

  • Practice and familiar items

Play dentist at home by counting each other’s teeth with a toothbrush or a small hand mirror. Bring a favourite toy or blanket if it helps your child feel secure in new places. A short list of your own questions about teething, thumb sucking, bottles or toothpaste is useful too, so nothing is forgotten in the moment.

At the appointment

The first look is quick, calm and done at the child’s pace.

  1. A knee-to-knee or lap exam

For very young children, the dentist may examine teeth while your child sits on your lap or lies back with their head resting toward the dentist. The dentist counts teeth, looks at the gums and checks for early signs of decay or injury. A light cleaning or fluoride may be offered if your child seems comfortable, but nothing is forced.

  2. Talking through findings and habits

Afterward the dentist talks with you about brushing technique, the right amount of fluoride toothpaste, bottle and sippy-cup habits, snacks, and pacifier or thumb use. It is a good time to ask anything you have wondered about since the first tooth arrived. You will also hear when the next visit is recommended and what it might include.

After the visit

Positive follow-through builds confidence over time.

Praise and routine

Praise your child for being brave and curious, whatever happened in the chair. Even if they cried, the experience still counts as a step forward and the next visit is often easier. Keep brushing twice a day as a shared routine, helping them until they can manage thoroughly on their own, and make it a calm part of the evening.

Planning future checkups

Regular visits help your child grow familiar with the office and the people who work there. If a first visit was difficult, mention it when booking the next one so the dentist can plan a gentler approach. Call between visits if you notice spots on the teeth, swelling, or a tumble that injures a tooth.

Planning your appointment

Bringing your little one from Vanessa

Call our Port Dover office to book a first visit. Let the team know your child’s age, any medical needs and how they usually react to new places, so the appointment can be planned around them.

Bring their health information, a list of any medications, and a favourite comfort item if they have one they like to hold.

First visit questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

What age should my child first see a dentist?

Many dental groups suggest a visit by the first birthday or within about six months of the first tooth appearing. If your child is older and has not been seen yet, booking now is still a good idea, and the visit can start just as gently.

What if my child cries during the visit?

Crying is very common at this age and is not a failure on anyone’s part. The dentist will work gently and may keep the visit short. Each calm, positive experience helps, even if the first one turns out a little tearful.

Can I be with my child the whole time?

Yes, for a first visit parents are usually right there throughout. Young children are often examined while sitting on a parent’s lap, which helps them feel secure and lets you see exactly what the dentist is checking.

Will my child have X-rays at the first visit?

Usually not for very young children unless there is a specific concern, such as an injury or visible decay. The dentist recommends X-rays based on age, risk and what needs to be seen, and will explain the reason if one is suggested.

How much toothpaste should I use for a toddler?

Typically a very small smear, about the size of a grain of rice, for young children, and a pea-sized amount once they are older and can spit. Ask the dentist at the visit for guidance suited to your child’s age and cavity risk.
