A gentle introduction

The first visit is mostly about getting comfortable.

A first dental appointment is usually short and relaxed. For babies and toddlers, it may be little more than a quick look at the teeth and gums while sitting on a parent’s lap, followed by a conversation about brushing, feeding and teething. The goal is to start healthy habits early and help the dental office feel familiar.

Parents in Fishers Glen often ask when to book that first visit. Many dental organizations suggest around the first birthday or within six months of the first tooth. Our Port Dover team is happy to talk through timing and what to expect when you call.

Choosing the time

Starting early tends to make later visits easier.

Early visits set a baseline

An early visit lets the dentist check that teeth are coming in as expected and spot early signs of decay, which can appear soon after teeth arrive. It also gives you a chance to ask questions about bottles, pacifiers, fluoride and teething. Children who start young often grow used to checkups before any treatment is needed.

Picking a good time of day

Book a time when your child is usually rested and fed, avoiding nap times if you can. A morning slot often works well for toddlers. Let the office know if your child has any medical, developmental or sensory needs so the appointment can be planned with those in mind from the beginning. Allow a little extra travel time so nobody feels rushed.

Preparing at home

What you say beforehand shapes how your child feels.

  • Positive, simple language

Talk about the dentist as someone who counts teeth and helps keep them strong. Avoid words like hurt, needle or drill, and do not share your own worries about the dentist in front of your child. If they ask questions you cannot answer, it is fine to say the dentist will explain when you get there.

  • Practice and familiarity

Let your child watch you brush, practise opening wide in front of a mirror or count a favourite toy’s teeth. Picture books about dental visits can help. Bring a small comfort item if your child has one. Keeping the mood light and matter-of-fact usually works better than building it up as a big event. Siblings can help by describing their own visits positively.

At the appointment

Your child sets the pace.

The lap exam

For very young children, the dentist may use a knee-to-knee position where your child lies back across both laps so the teeth can be seen while your child looks at you. The dentist checks the teeth, gums and bite, may wipe or brush the teeth and might apply fluoride if appropriate. Some crying is normal and not a sign of failure.

Tips for parents

You will have time to ask about brushing technique, toothpaste amounts, thumb or pacifier habits and diet. The dentist may point out anything to watch and suggest when to return. If your child is older and nervous, the team may just let them sit in the chair and explore at a first visit. That still counts as progress.

Afterwards

Habits at home matter more than any single visit.

  1. Daily routines that help

Brush twice a day using a smear of fluoride toothpaste for children under three and a pea-sized amount after that, or as the dentist advises. Help your child brush until they can do it well. Offer water between meals and avoid bedtime bottles with milk or juice to reduce the risk of early decay. Lift the lip now and then to check for white or brown spots.

  2. Planning the next checkup

Praise your child after the visit for what they did well, however small. Book the next checkup at the interval the dentist suggests so visits become routine. If you notice a dark spot, swelling or a fall that injures a tooth before then, call the office for advice. Keeping the number handy makes it easier to reach the team quickly if something happens.

First visit questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

When should my child first see a dentist?

A common recommendation is by the first birthday or within six months of the first tooth appearing. If you have missed that window, it is never too late to start. The dentist can assess your child at any age.

Can I sit with my child?

Yes, parents are typically involved in a young child’s first visit, often with the child on their lap. Ask about the arrangements when you book if your child is older or you have particular preferences.

What if my child cries?

Crying is common for little ones and does not mean the visit went badly. The dentist can usually still take a quick look. Staying calm and positive yourself helps your child feel safe. The next visit is often easier.

Will my child have X-rays at the first visit?

Usually not for very young children unless there is a specific concern. The dentist will explain if X-rays are needed and why, based on your child’s age, development and risk factors. You can ask any questions before images are taken.

How should I clean my baby’s teeth?

Use a soft infant toothbrush with a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste twice a day once teeth appear. The dentist or hygienist can show you a comfortable position for brushing at the first appointment. Brushing at the same times each day helps.
