Port Dover Family Dentistry
A child's first visit does not automatically include a cleaning. Before travelling from Delhi, confirm its focus and ask how age and needs shape the appointment.

Welcoming Delhi families at our office in Port Dover
All dental services for DelhiA first visit is a beginning for the whole family
The first dental appointment gives parents a chance to discuss emerging teeth, cleaning and the habits that shape early oral health. It also introduces your child to the people and setting involved in their care. You do not need to wait until all the baby teeth have arrived.
Delhi families are welcome at our Port Dover office. Tell us your child’s age, whether teeth have appeared and any concern that prompted the call so we can help plan the visit.

When to begin
The Canadian Dental Association recommends a first assessment within six months of the first tooth appearing, or by the first birthday. Early discussion gives you a place to ask about home care and have developing concerns reviewed before a child can describe them clearly.
If your child is older and has not yet attended, explain their current needs and arrange care now. Tell the team this will be a first dental visit so preparation can reflect their age and experience. Mention pain, swelling or an injury separately; those concerns need their own consideration when the appointment is arranged.
Prepare without pressure
You can explain that the dental team will look at their teeth and help with keeping the mouth healthy. Avoid setting a performance goal such as promising they will sit perfectly still. Let the office know about unfamiliar-setting worries or communication needs in advance.
Discuss appointment timing in relation to your child's usual routine, and ask what to bring. Mention a comfort item if it helps in unfamiliar surroundings. Once the team explains the intended focus, keep preparation at home proportionate to that visit rather than trying to rehearse procedures that may not be planned.
During the appointment
The clinician reviews the mouth as appropriate to your child’s age and cooperation, and talks with you about relevant history. Share feeding habits, brushing difficulties, medical information and any change you have noticed. Your observations are particularly useful when the child cannot explain symptoms.
Ask for a cleaning demonstration and guidance on products and amounts appropriate to your child. Describe an awkward part of brushing so the advice addresses a real task you face at home. Before leaving, check that you understand the method and whom to contact if you struggle to put it into practice.
After the introduction
Before leaving, ask when your child should return and what the next visit is intended to review. If the examination could not be completed, clarify how the team recommends continuing rather than assuming the first attempt settled every concern.
At home, try the routine discussed and note which parts need more explanation or assistance. You can raise those questions with the practice rather than assuming you must manage alone until the next visit. Contact the team separately about a new symptom, injury or change in eating so the appointment plan can be reconsidered.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office with your child’s age and any current concern. Let us know about medical conditions, communication preferences or earlier difficult health-care experiences.
Confirm the appointment time and expected focus before travelling. Bring your questions about brushing, feeding habits and the changes you are seeing as teeth emerge.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Do not use independent chair sitting as the reason to postpone early assessment. Tell the team your child’s age and needs. The clinician can discuss an approach suited to a young child and explain how a parent may be involved.
Let the team know about worries beforehand and discuss the next step if the visit is difficult. What can be completed depends on your child’s needs and response. Ask how any remaining assessment will be arranged rather than treating cooperation as a pass-or-fail test.
It is still useful to arrange care now. Explain that this is the first dental visit and mention current symptoms or concerns. The team can plan an age-appropriate assessment and help you establish a routine going forward.
Have medical and medication information available, along with questions about cleaning, eating or changes in the mouth. If another clinician has assessed an injury or concern, mention that history so relevant information can be considered.
The services depend on age, assessed needs and what can appropriately be completed. Confirm the booking rather than assuming an adult-style cleaning is part of every first visit. Ask what was reviewed and what follow-up is recommended.
Does every child's checkup need X-rays? Delhi parents can ask what an image would clarify and how earlier records inform an examination at our Port Dover practice.
If a child's cleaning is partly completed, ask what remains and how to continue. Delhi families can discuss the next visit and home-care steps in Port Dover.
