A gentle first meeting

The first visit is mostly about getting comfortable.

For a toddler or young child, the dental office is full of new sights, sounds and people. A first appointment is often short and relaxed, with the main goals being a quick look at the teeth, a chance for parents to ask questions and an introduction that feels friendly rather than overwhelming.

If you are bringing a little one from Cultus, our Port Dover team can suggest a time of day that suits naps and routines. We keep the first visit simple and focus on helping your child feel safe, so future checkups start from a positive place.

When to start

Starting early makes dentistry familiar.

Around the first tooth or first birthday

Many dental organizations suggest a first visit around the time the first tooth appears or by the first birthday. Early visits let the dentist check development, look for signs of early decay and offer guidance on teething, brushing and feeding habits. If your child is older and has not been yet, it is never too late to begin.

Booking around your child’s routine

Choose a time when your child is usually rested and fed. Morning appointments often suit toddlers well, but every family is different. When you call, mention anything that tends to upset your child, such as bright lights or unfamiliar people, so the team can plan around it where possible. Leaving a little extra travel time also keeps the morning calm.

Preparing at home

Small rehearsals can ease first-visit nerves.

  1. Reading, play and practice

Picture books about visiting the dentist, pretend play with a stuffed animal and practising opening wide while you count their teeth can all help. Let your child hold a toothbrush and look in a mirror. Familiarity with these simple actions can make the real visit feel more like something they already know. Keep these games short and light-hearted.

  2. Words that reassure

Keep your language calm and positive. Say that the dentist will look at their teeth and help keep them strong. Try to avoid words like hurt or needle, even when reassuring, since they can introduce worries your child did not have. If you feel anxious about dentistry yourself, try to keep it gently in the background.

During the appointment

Expect a brief, relaxed look rather than a long procedure.

A lap exam for little ones

Very young children are often examined while sitting on a parent’s lap, facing the dentist. The dentist counts teeth, checks gums and looks at how teeth are coming in. A gentle cleaning or fluoride application may be offered depending on your child’s age and needs. The pace follows what your child can comfortably manage. Even a short look counts as a successful start.

Time for your questions

This is a good time to ask about teething, soothers, thumb sucking, bottles at night and how much toothpaste to use. The dentist can show you how to brush your child’s teeth and lift the lip to check for early problems. Writing questions down beforehand helps you remember them in the moment, especially while you are keeping a toddler settled.

Afterward

End on a good note and build from there.

  • Praise and simple routines

Praise your child for any cooperation, even if the visit did not go perfectly. Some children need a few appointments before they relax. Keep brushing as part of the daily routine, twice a day, and make it a shared activity where you finish the job even if they want to try on their own. A song or timer can make two minutes feel shorter.

  • Scheduling the next checkup

Ask the dentist when your child should return. Regular visits help them become familiar with the office and allow the team to follow development over time. If something worries you between checkups, such as a dark spot on a tooth or a fall, call rather than waiting for the next appointment. The team would rather hear about it early.

Before you book

First-visit questions from parents

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How old should my child be for a first visit?

A visit around the first tooth or first birthday is commonly recommended. If your child is older, booking now is still worthwhile. The dentist will tailor the visit to your child’s age and development, keeping it short and friendly.

What if my child cries?

Crying is very common at first visits and is nothing to be embarrassed about. The team is used to working with young children and will keep things brief and gentle. Comfort usually grows with each visit.

Will my child have X-rays at the first appointment?

Usually not for very young children unless there is a specific concern. The dentist will explain if images are recommended later and why they would be helpful for your child. Images are suggested only when they add useful information.

Can siblings come along?

Often an older sibling having a smooth checkup can reassure a younger child. Let the team know if you would like to bring siblings so they can plan the appointment time accordingly and keep the visit relaxed for everyone.

Should I brush my baby’s teeth before the first visit?

Yes. Start brushing as soon as the first tooth appears, using a soft brush and a small smear of fluoride toothpaste. The dentist can check your technique and offer tips during the visit, including positions that make brushing easier.
