A gentle introduction

The first visit is mostly about getting comfortable.

Many families wonder when to book a child’s first dental appointment and what will actually happen. Early visits are usually short and relaxed. They let the dentist look at the first teeth, answer questions about teething, brushing and feeding, and give the child a chance to meet the team without any pressure.

Families in Bloomsburg can book this introductory visit at our Port Dover office. Parents are encouraged to share concerns and their child’s temperament ahead of time so the appointment can be paced to suit a toddler or young child who has never sat in a dental chair.

When to book

An early visit lets prevention begin before problems appear.

Around the first teeth

A first visit is commonly suggested once the first teeth arrive or around the first birthday. Coming early is not about finding problems; it gives parents guidance on cleaning tiny teeth, fluoride use and habits like bottle feeding at night. Starting young also means future visits feel familiar rather than strange to the child. Many parents find it reassuring too.

Reasons to come sooner

Book sooner if you notice white or brown spots on the teeth, swelling of the gums, a chipped tooth after a fall, or if your child seems to be in pain while eating. Families with a history of early cavities may also benefit from starting checkups earlier. The team can help you decide when to schedule.

Preparing your child

Small decisions at home can make the visit go smoothly.

  • Choose a good time of day

Try to book at a time when your child is usually rested and fed, rather than near nap time. Allow extra time for the trip so no one feels rushed. Bring a favourite toy or blanket if it helps. Let the office know about any medical conditions, allergies or developmental needs when you schedule the appointment.

  • Use positive, simple words

Talk about the visit in a matter-of-fact way: the dentist will count their teeth and look at their smile. Avoid words like hurt, needle or scary, even when reassuring. Picture books, videos or practising with a toothbrush and mirror can help. Your own calm attitude is one of the strongest signals a child picks up.

During the visit

Young children may sit on a parent’s lap for the exam.

A quick look in a comfortable position

For toddlers, a knee-to-knee position is often used, with the child lying back on a parent’s lap while the dentist looks in. The dentist checks the teeth, gums and bite, and may gently clean or apply fluoride if appropriate. Crying is normal at this age and does not mean the visit has failed or that it hurt.

Time for parents’ questions

Much of the appointment is spent talking with parents about brushing, toothpaste amounts, teething, pacifiers and diet. Write down questions in advance so you remember them. The dentist can explain what was seen, what looks healthy and anything that should be watched before the next checkup. No question is too small at this stage, whether it concerns sippy cups, night feeds or how to brush a wriggling toddler.

After the visit

What you do afterward shapes how the next visit feels.

  1. Celebrate and reinforce

Praise your child for trying, whatever happened during the appointment. Talk about the visit positively, and keep brushing routines consistent at home. Letting your child brush first and then finishing the job yourself helps them feel involved. Avoid using the dentist as a threat, since it can make future appointments harder for everyone. Keep the tone light.

  2. Plan the next checkup

Ask when the next checkup should be scheduled and book it before leaving if convenient. Regular short visits help children grow comfortable with the office and the team. Keep a note of any questions that arise at home, such as thumb sucking or a new spot on a tooth, to bring to the next appointment.

Planning your appointment

Planning the first trip from Bloomsburg.

Call our Port Dover office to arrange your child’s first visit. Share their age, any concerns about teeth or habits, and the times of day that usually work best for your child.

If an older sibling is also due for a checkup, ask about booking close together so the younger child can watch first.

Before you book

First visit questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How old should my child be for a first visit?

Many families book around the time the first teeth appear or near the first birthday. The team can suggest timing based on your child’s development and any concerns you have noticed at home. Earlier is fine if something worries you.

What if my child cries the whole time?

That is very common with young children and is not a sign that something went wrong. The dentist works quickly and gently, and repeated positive visits usually help children settle. Try not to apologize to the team; they expect it.

Will my child have X-rays at the first visit?

Usually not for very young children unless there is a specific concern. The dentist will explain if imaging seems useful and why, and you can ask any questions before deciding. Nothing is taken without your agreement.

Should I brush my child’s teeth before the visit?

Brushing as usual is helpful. There is no need to do anything special. The dentist and hygienist can show you techniques for cleaning your child’s teeth more easily at home. Bring the toothbrush you use now if you like.

Can I be with my child in the room?

Yes, parents are usually with young children for the first visit. For toddlers, the exam is often done while the child sits on your lap, which helps them feel secure. Your closeness makes a real difference.
