Mouthguard assessments for Port Rowan children take place at our Port Dover practice
All dental services for Port RowanMake protection part of preparing for activity
A sports mouthguard helps protect teeth and oral tissues during activities where impacts or falls can occur. For children, fit needs particular attention because teeth are erupting and changing position. A guard that worked last season may no longer sit comfortably or provide an appropriate fit.
Port Rowan families can discuss mouthguards at our Port Dover practice. Tell us the activities your child takes part in, whether braces are present and how any existing guard feels. The assessment helps identify a suitable approach and the checks needed as the mouth develops.

Describe the activity and equipment
Mention the sport, contact involved and other protective equipment your child uses. Ask about an appropriate guard for the activity and the child's teeth. Mouthguards can reduce dental injury risk, but no appliance guarantees that every impact will leave the mouth unharmed.
Tell the clinician about any device already worn and the reason it was prescribed, along with earlier tooth injuries. A grinding appliance and a sports guard have different purposes. Clarifying the existing equipment before selecting protection helps the family understand which device belongs to which activity rather than substituting one because both cover teeth.
Assess a changing fit
Explain whether your child keeps clenching to retain the guard, feels pressure or repeatedly removes it because of gagging. Those experiences belong in the fit assessment alongside eruption and tooth position. A device can look intact in its case while being impractical to wear, so describe actual use rather than judging suitability from appearance alone.
If braces are present, ask how protection should accommodate them and who will review the guard as treatment progresses. Do not force an older appliance over changing teeth or attachments. A new fit assessment may be needed before the child continues using it.
Practise wearing and handling
At fitting, invite your child to describe pressure and any difficulty speaking or breathing while the clinician can check the device. Practise insertion and removal and make sure the accompanying adult understands the instructions. This lets the child learn how the guard should be handled before managing it independently with the rest of the sports kit.
Ask which problems warrant a return visit rather than home adjustment. Chewing the material, cutting edges or heating a guard outside its instructions can affect its fit. Bring concerns to the team so changes are assessed against the actual appliance and the child's mouth.
Maintain protection between seasons
Follow the supplied cleaning and storage instructions and keep the guard away from heat and pets. Check for tears, distortion and worn areas. Teach the child to report a change in fit instead of carrying on with an uncomfortable appliance simply because it is familiar.
Bring the guard to the reviews recommended by the team and discuss reassessment after dental changes or significant impact. If an injury causes symptoms or visible damage, seek appropriate care for the child as well as checking the equipment. Having worn a mouthguard does not establish that the teeth and jaw are unharmed.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover team with your child's activity schedule and any existing appliance concerns. Ask about assessment and fitting arrangements early enough to understand the steps involved before a season or event begins.
Bring the current guard and mention braces, loose teeth or recent injuries. Confirm cleaning instructions and how often fit should be checked as your child's teeth change, rather than relying only on the appliance's age.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Its condition and fit need review, especially if teeth have erupted or moved. Age alone does not determine suitability. Bring the guard and explain any discomfort so the clinician can assess whether it still fits appropriately or needs replacement.
It helps reduce injury risk but cannot guarantee complete protection from every impact. Continue using appropriate equipment and seek assessment after an injury when there is pain, movement or visible damage. A guard does not replace evaluation of new symptoms.
Discuss protection with the treating dental or orthodontic team so the design accommodates the appliance and changing tooth positions. Follow their guidance on fit and review. Do not force a guard over braces if it no longer seats as advised.
Tell the clinician and describe when it happens. The appliance and fit may need assessment rather than expecting the child to tolerate it or trim it at home. A usable protection plan should account for comfort and the child's ability to wear it.
The devices are designed for different purposes, so ask before substituting one for the other. The clinician can explain suitable protection for the activity and the child's mouth. A device's appearance alone does not establish that it provides the intended sports protection.
Sort your child's exam findings into prevention, observation and treatment with the dentist. Our Port Rowan guide helps parents understand the purpose of each step.
