Port Dover Family Dentistry
A season start date should leave time for mouthguard assessment and fitting. Tell our Port Dover team when your child begins sport and ask about the visits needed.

All Port Dover dental servicesProtection that keeps up with growth
Sporting activities can expose teeth to impact, and a guard’s fit matters when a child is speaking, breathing and moving. Growing mouths also change, so a device from a previous season should not be assumed suitable indefinitely.
Our Port Dover team can assess mouthguard needs and discuss the sport, developing teeth and any orthodontic appliances. Bring an existing guard to explain what works and what does not.

Plan protection
Tell the dentist which sport your child plays, how often they participate and what other protective equipment they use. Mention previous injuries and any guard they have avoided wearing. Understanding whether the problem was pressure, looseness or another difficulty helps make the next fitting discussion more specific.
A mouthguard belongs within the wider set of precautions for the activity. Discuss how it should be used alongside other appropriate equipment, while recognizing that it cannot prevent every injury. If an impact occurs, the fact that a guard was worn does not remove the need for assessment of a concerning injury.
Assess the fit
The assessment considers the teeth that have appeared, spaces where teeth are changing and any braces or other appliances. Ask why the proposed design is suitable now and how development may affect its useful fit. Mention orthodontic care so advice can be coordinated where appropriate rather than treating the guard as separate from that treatment.
An older guard that once seated comfortably may fit differently as teeth change. Do not force it over newly appearing teeth or orthodontic work. Describe where it catches, presses or feels loose and arrange review before continuing to rely on it; the date it was purchased cannot establish its present suitability.
At delivery
At delivery, discuss how the guard stays in place and whether your child can use it comfortably. Encourage them to describe pressure, looseness or difficulty speaking or breathing honestly. Reluctance to wear it may reflect a fit problem, so their account deserves attention before the appliance becomes part of the sports routine.
Get instructions for wearing, cleaning and storing this particular guard, and make sure the child and whoever helps with equipment understand them. Ask how to obtain advice if it is damaged or lost during the season. Knowing the contact and replacement process in advance is useful when the next session is approaching.
Seasonal review
Check for visible damage and changes in seating, especially when a baby tooth is lost or a permanent tooth appears. Ask your child whether it feels different rather than relying only on how it looks. Bring the actual guard to recommended reviews so the clinician can assess its condition and fit directly.
Contact the team before trimming or reshaping the appliance at home. A changed mouth may need a different arrangement, and a makeshift adjustment does not establish that protection remains appropriate. Review new discomfort or looseness when it develops instead of assuming the guard should last until the current season ends.
Planning your appointment
Tell our Port Dover office about the sport and any upcoming start date. Ask what assessment and fitting appointments are needed rather than assuming immediate delivery.
Bring the current guard and explain orthodontic care so protection can be planned around the child’s actual mouth.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Its condition and fit need review, especially after tooth loss, eruption or orthodontic changes. Age alone does not determine suitability, and a device that feels tight or loose should not simply be forced into use.
Appliances for grinding and sport have different purposes. Ask about protection appropriate to the activity rather than substituting another dental device based on its appearance or availability at home.
Discuss the orthodontic appliance and treatment with the dentist. Fit and changing tooth positions require consideration, and advice should be coordinated where appropriate instead of assuming an existing guard will accommodate everything.
No protective device offers that guarantee. Use it as instructed alongside other appropriate equipment and precautions, and seek assessment after an injury even when the mouthguard was being worn.
Ask them to describe the problem and arrange a fit review. Pressure, looseness or difficulty using the device deserves attention rather than assuming reluctance is simply a lack of cooperation.
Recreational activities belong in a sports guard discussion alongside team sports. Tell our Port Dover practice where impact may occur and how often you participate.
Keep a child's urgent dental care connected between providers. Our Port Dover guide explains sharing instructions, arranging follow-up and updating other caregivers.
