Children take knocks during organized sports and backyard games alike. A mouthguard cushions blows to the teeth, lips and gums and may reduce the risk of chipped or knocked-out teeth. Because children’s mouths change as teeth erupt and jaws grow, a guard that fit last season may no longer protect as intended.
Peacock Point families can arrange a mouthguard fitting at our Port Dover office. Mention which sports your child plays, whether they wear braces and when the season starts, so the team can discuss timing and the type of guard that suits your child’s mouth.

Why a guard matters
Contact sports such as hockey, lacrosse and football are obvious examples, but basketball, soccer, cycling, skateboarding and martial arts also carry a risk of face injuries. Even casual games on the beach or at the park can lead to a stray elbow or ball. Talk with your child’s coach or league about mouthguard requirements for each activity.
Front teeth in children often stick out slightly as the face grows, making them more vulnerable. An injury to a young permanent tooth can affect its root development. A mouthguard is not a guarantee against damage, but it offers a meaningful layer of protection, especially when combined with other appropriate safety equipment for the sport.
Choosing a type
A custom guard is made from an impression or scan of your child’s teeth, so it follows the shape of their mouth closely. A good fit can make breathing and speaking easier and may encourage your child to actually wear it. The dentist can also consider erupting teeth and allow for growth when designing the guard.
Stock and boil-and-bite guards are widely available and better than no protection at all. However, they may feel bulky, loosen during play or fail to cover the teeth properly. If your child already uses one, bring it along so the dentist can check whether it fits well enough or whether a different option would be more suitable.
The fitting
The dentist first checks your child’s teeth to make sure there are no problems that should be treated beforehand. An impression or digital scan of the teeth is then taken, which is usually quick and painless. If your child has braces or loose baby teeth, the dentist will discuss how the guard can accommodate them.
When the guard is ready, your child will try it in. The dentist checks that it stays in place, covers the right teeth and does not press on the gums. Ask your child to talk and breathe with it in. Small adjustments can make a big difference to comfort, which in turn makes regular wear more likely.
Care and replacement
Rinse the guard after each use and brush it gently with cool water. Store it in a ventilated case and keep it away from hot cars and direct sun, which can warp the material. Remind your child not to chew on it or share it with teammates. A clean, intact guard is more pleasant to wear and more effective.
Children may need a new guard as teeth erupt and jaws grow, sometimes each season. Check for tears, holes or a loose fit regularly. Bring the guard to dental checkups so it can be assessed. If your child has a dental injury while playing, contact the office promptly even if the guard was worn.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book a fitting, ideally a few weeks before the season begins. Mention the sports your child plays and whether they wear braces or other appliances.
Bring any current mouthguard your child uses and the league’s equipment requirements if you have them.

A guard can be considered whenever a child takes part in activities with a risk of falls or contact. The dentist can advise on suitability based on the teeth present and the sport, including for younger children with baby teeth.
Yes, protection is especially important with braces, which can cut the lips during an impact. Some guards are designed to accommodate orthodontic appliances. Ask the dentist and orthodontist which option suits your child.
It depends on growth, wear and damage. Many children outgrow a guard as new teeth come in. Bring it to checkups so the fit can be assessed, and replace it if it is torn, loose or uncomfortable.
A poorly fitting or bulky guard can feel uncomfortable. A custom guard may be slimmer and fit more closely. Bring the current guard to the office so the dentist can suggest adjustments or alternatives.
Contact the office promptly to describe the injury. If a permanent tooth is knocked out, handle it by the crown and seek care immediately. For a head injury or breathing difficulty, seek emergency medical care first.
Adult hockey, rugby, martial arts or pickup games can all bring a risk of mouth injury. Peacock Point athletes can order a fitted sports guard at our Port Dover office.
A fall on the beach, a sudden toothache or a knocked-out tooth can rattle any family. Peacock Point parents can call our Port Dover office for guidance on urgent child care.
